Hello everyone,

Should I be concerned about a stone with the IdealScope & magnified images I attached below if it has a girdle thickness that ranges from 1.5% - 4.5% (as measured by AGS)? This is on a 5mm diameter stone. I don''t know a whole lot about diamonds (I''m trying though!), but from what I''ve read I think that if the girdle thickness adversely affected the performance that it would be seen in the IdealScope image. Is this correct?

Could this be a stone that they were trying to ''cheat'' by hiding weight in the girdle?

Thank you for your help!

the girdle measurements you posted (thin-slightly thick) are not uncommon. as far as the pics..the idealscope image is great and the magnified photo is clean. looks like you could have a winner

If its the new ags cert with performance grades on it then the girdle measurements are the very thinnest point on the girdle and the thickest point.

How would one distinguish between an old AGS cert and a new age AGS cert? I have looked at the AGS certs of a few different diamonds to get an idea, and it seems like maybe the old certs were more ''landscape'' in orientation, while the newer ones are ''portrait'' style. The ''newer'' looking ones that I have seen contain cut, color, and clarity scales on the main page while the old ones do not.

I would assume the change from old -> new took place sometime during 2005? Does anyone know when that change might have taken place? The posts on the topic seem to be pretty recent - July 2005 or so.

Thanks!

Could these be examples of the old certs and the new age certs?

You got it :}
New certs just came out about a month ago.

you are correct. the first cert you posted is the older version, the second is the newer version.

So that explains the wide range of girdle measurements then. :)

Yep.
Both ways of doing it are valid but I kinda wish that AGS was reporting it both ways.
The different ways of reporting it really give you different "pictures" of the girdle and having both views would be nice.

Thought I would go ahead and put up some pictures of the ring now that I have it. This is the stone that was referenced in my posts above. It is a .494 carat ACA purchased from Whiteflash with F color and SI1 clarity. The quality of the lighting wasn''t the greatest, and I think I had some fingerprints on the ring. But what the heck, the little point and shoot camera did pretty good anyway!
