Hi Guys,
I really hope you all can help me. My fiance and i have been shopping for an ering for a while now and the budget is about $2500. We had initially been looking on ebay and costco because it just seemed like i could get a good sized ring especially on ebay but then i stumbled on this site and i am beginning to realize that that may not be the best way to go. Here are the specifics of the kind of ring i will like to have. I think i will like a square or rectangular cushion or radiant cut with a setting with side stones that will not be protruding too much. I will like to have a good sized center diamond though with maybe and am willing to have an I colored ring with SI2 clarity (as long as its eye clean and it sparkles am good. Below are a few examples of rings that i was looking at on ebay. Please help!!!

ok...here are some options...would leave you around $1000 for a setting (or you could get a simpler setting and put more into the center stone)

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=AGS-104049553005
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS1-Good-Cut-Radiant-Diamond-1355192.asp
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1290197.asp

for settings maybe something simpler like this?
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/ring/item_412-8325.asp

you could also try posting in colored-stones and ask about ebay settings?

Hi Thanks you for your response and i do love those James allen stone but here is the thing i do not really see any settings that i really like there at my kind of price range so if for example i find a setting else where maybe like on white flash would i have to send the stone to white flash to get it put into the setting? I keep reading that its best to buy the stone and setting in one place.

Thank you

yes it is easiest to buy the stone and setting in the same place but of course you do not have to. if you get the stone and setting at different vendors you would want to get insurance during the setting process and also may encounter an outside setting fee.

if whiteflash has a setting you like have you considered a round or a princess cut center stone?

I really was trying to stay away from the traditional round or princess cut i was hope i could get a squarish or rectangular like e-ring but if i have no choice i will go with those. Also i have some 24k gold jewelry that i dont mind converting into a setting for my ring..... is it possible to have that melted and recreated into a setting for my ring do you think thats a wise solution? If i could do that then maybe i could add more money to my diamond.

I don't think melting gold would be cost effective. of course you have a choice but I was trying to suggest some alternatives :)

You really don't save much by melting down your own gold, it is better to buy new and sell the old for scrap.

What style of setting do you like?

Is there a setting that you already have in mind that you like that you could post? It would give a better idea of what you are looking for :appl:

Those settings are just do not look like good quality to me, and I think you will regret it if you go in that direction. The problem is, you are not going to be able to get a large diamond and a good quality setting like that with our budget. You'd have to get a small diamond in order to spend most of your money on a halo setting.

This one is $1421 in white gold: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/diamond-braid-diamond-engagement-ring-120.htm

$1661 http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/amphora-diamond-engagement-ring-1039.htm

You have about $1000 left for the stone if you go for a setting such as these. That may get you about a half carat I SI stone. I would never buy a diamond engagement ring off of ebay, but in your case, I can see why you might want to check out Costco since they do have a good return policy.

Re: Help Newbie with a low budget please help me find my e-

Based on the fact that you're looking for a rectangle or square-ish non-princess shape, I'd recommend checking out the variety of cuts available from GoodOldGold.com. They have some unique cuts that are only available through them. They don't list a lot of settings on their site, but they are a bricks and mortar jewelry store and you could tell them/show them the setting styles you like and your budget and see what they can do. I'm afraid the more ornate setting styles you like won't leave a lot of room in the budget for the center stone, and might make finding a wedding band tricky. Maybe check out www.eternitydiamonds.com for some other ideas--they have lots of nice halo settings and can customize them for any shape center stone for a minimal cost.

I would not buy a cushion or radiant without images...there is just too much variation.

Re: Help Newbie with a low budget please help me find my e-

I am by no means a cushion expert, but on James Allen you can see images and get a better 'feel' for the various shapes (with rectangular cushions, you may prefer a certain ratio). A few in your price range:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1319075.asp
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1324949.asp
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1325206.asp

If you like any of the diamonds you see on James Allen, you could ask Whiteflash if they have access to the same diamond (just give them the GIA certificate number) since that will save you from having to buy the diamond from one vendor and the setting from another and then having to pay for insurance while the diamond is being set. I asked Whiteflash about getting a stone I found elsewhere, and they were willing to honor the Pricescope discount price of the other vendor.
