Help Needed!

Hi my fellow diamond lovers!

I’m not sure this is the right section, however I value your expertise and opinions so need help!

Years back 2013-2014 I used a highly recommended vendor on this board (not ready to disclose yet) based on good reviews to purchase my ering setting and matching 3/4 eternity band. I selected a uprong ering setting (14 diamonds) and matching 3/4 eternity band (15 stones). All was good and I was happy! They even made me other items which I was happy about not I’m not sure about them either. Fast forward a few weeks ago hubby and I purchased a larger round stone from a new vendor (highly recommended) which means I needed to at minimum get a new ering setting. My plan was to incorporate all or some of the round .10 point stones from my existing ering setting to create a new ering. The current vendor I’m using came up with a ering design to incorporate some of my .10 pointers (which meant a ton to my DH) and polish and make my 3/4 wedding band with my .10 pointers like new. I was ecstatic thinking I would use some of my .10 pointers and have some .10 pointers remaining to possibly make earrings/bracelet, etc. and maybe upgrade my .10 pointers in my wedding band to .12-.15 in the near future using the first vendor that I learned about from this board who appeared highly recommended.

Welp sadly that possiblity was ruined today as the new vendor I’m using that is highly recommended on this board as well informed me that out of the 29 round .10 pointers from my ering and wedding band combined that only 14 can be used because the other 15 are damaged due to the settings that was sold to me as set were made where the diamonds stick out past the metal causing them to rub!!! I’ve read many posts on this board with people having these issues never did I thing I’d be one of them. I was sold my items as a set never told a spacer should be used, now I’m pissed because I thought I had 29 good .10 round pointers that I could use to create a new ering setting, polish my existing wedding band and later use remaining stones to create something new but sadly due to the way my set was sold to me with lack of info I’m only left with 14.

Diamonds and gems suffer wear and tear more through people not taking them off and having active lifestyles and being rough to them then just an issue with the way they are set. If the stones are chipped and damaged and the original settings aren't damaged, that may indeed say more about how you need to be careful how you treat your rings in future and how you reset the stones in future rather than the company who made them.

Sometimes stones of sentiment can also be repolished, although if they are small stones the cost usually will beat you.

Thank you for your post. I’m very OCD and honestly I don’t think I used them as much as I should yet alone being active as you mention hence being devastated and shocked that 15 stones are damaged.

Is the metal in the original ring, like the prongs damaged too? That's a pretty standard U prong type setting, the stones don't look like they are set up really high in it to me. If the sides of some of those diamonds is chipped you need to think about resetting them into a more protective setting next time around.

All I was told by the vendor I’m using is the following.
“Whoever made your last settings made them in a way that the stones on both rings overhang past the metal of the setting. That means your ring stones have been rubbing together and chipping one another“.

Wait, so the new vendor hasn't actually *seen* the setting, and is simply assuming that the stones are chipped? I am confused by that. Standard U-prong settings don't just randomly chip unless the stones are really high (as said by a previous poster), or something else happened to damage them.

The new vendor has them in hand and informed me of this issue.

Note I sent both my ering and wedding band to new vendor so new vendor has my both in their possession.

huh--I'm surprised that happened. Obviously nothing is impossible, and I certainly don't doubt the new vendor, I'm just surprised that there was so much chipping. I guess it's because the sides of the stones are hitting each other without anything protecting them?

Yeah I have no idea because for like the last year I haven’t even used the ering so to my surprise stones would be damaged. I’ve very careful with all my items because I’m OCD so it’s not like I’m rough which would add up to the damage.

No it's not from them just being too high now I've read their comments it's from the sides of the diamonds sticking out sideways the edges of the diamonds, ie the girdles have been rubbing against the other diamonds and metal in the setting next to it. And adding that to the photos it makes perfect sense now too.

That is twofold yes it's the original jewellers fault for not telling you that could happen and happily designing a set where that could happen without telling you to buy a spacer or not wear the two rings together.

You need to buy a spacer or design a setting where the stones and rings don't rub up against each other.

I am sorry but I think this happens all the time. It’s also wear and tear. It doesn’t surprise me that Jewelers don’t warn you. And I think people in general are tougher than we think. Good luck. Now you know what to ask and what you want from your new jeweler.
