Hi there!!!
OK!! I finally found my OMC and I'm really excited. I'm working with Ilya.
First of all, what do you think of the stone???
It's 2.20ct (8.07x8.09) ,O/P, SI2.
OMC.jpg
Do I go with platinum or rose gold for the setting??
Also, diamonds or no diamonds??
I would love to do something like this for the setting:

I know that's not the same shape but the idea of the very thin delicate band, I love.
Would you recommend diamonds under and on the band or no???
So many thoughts!!
Thank you!!!

Rose gold will look lovely...

That is beautiful!!!
He tells me the stone does not appear yellow I but has a little bit if warmth to it..I am concerned about that because I’m not really going for yellow.

Have you seen the stone in person yet? I think once you see it in person you will be able to tell right away what color metal you want to go with. I do think that O/P will be a warm stone. I don’t think it will be a bit of warmth but warm and beautiful!

No I have not! Maybe I should ask if that’s possible!
This. I'd ask to see it in person and then play with it at a jewelry store, looking at settings of different metals. From your photo I'd say that it has a yellow tint, so I'd tend towards yellow gold vs. rose gold. But since I don't like yellow gold I'd actually do platinum .

What matters most of course though is what you like!

Congrats on your new stone! How exciting!

I also love rose gold, it's so beautiful. I also own an N colored AVC, that when held next to my rose gold pieces, the rose gold (IMHO) actually clashed with the N color. Sounds strange, but to my eye, it really did. But regular gold really compliments that stone. I'd say my N color is somewhat buttery, almost champagne like. DS has seen it. Its not strikingly yellow, but definitely has warmth.

I initially set it in a platinum setting, didn't like it, & now its patiently waiting in line at CvB. However, my goal was completely different than yours: the platinum setting made the stone appear more grey, & less of the buttery tone I loved about the stone, which I wanted to enhance. I should of saved myself the $$ with the plat setting & gone straight to CvB.

So if you want to minimize the warmth, I'd suggest platinum instead of a gold. The plat will definitely play down the warmth in your stone. As for diamond sides, from what I've read here on PS, the sides can potentially enhance the color of the stone, ie if you have a very warm center (like yours & mine) & use white sides, it'll show more contrast between the center & sides--but I'd wait until someone more experienced than I comments on the sides! I'm not experienced (in the least) with setting decisions & potential outcomes, but just posting my 2 cents with a N colored stone vs a platinum setting.

Good luck, & I'll follow your thread with interest!

Thanks you all for all the info!! Sarahb, that is really interesting I think I did read that somewhere else once. That the platinum might play down the warmth.
Oh my gosh, the only other thing I might consider is going with a smaller stone but whiter color. I really don’t want yellow. Darn it this is soooooooooo hard.

Love that stone. Actually inquired about it:) Definitely 18k yellow gold!

Ruby, is this ring meant to be an ER? What do you want out of this stone?

I guess it depends on what your goals are for this ring. Mine is to be a RHR, plus I wanted something with some warmth. If you don't want a warm stone, & can go to a whiter stone, then I'd do that. Not saying your OMC is a 'bad' choice, because its not. All I'm trying to say is it just may not be the 'right' choice.

There’s so much charm in older cuts like this. It’s possible for the diamond to not appear “yellow” as your jeweller has described. But I am inclined to agree with @diamondseeker2006 about the likelihood of some tint, whether it's characterised as warmth or another descriptor. That’s not negative, in fact it’s part of the charm. Using yellow or rose gold will emphasize whatever tint is present, which some people absolutely love. Using white metal could reduce the appearance of tint, but it also provides a backdrop where that tint will be easier to detect in some lighting.

We deal with clients remotely and discuss many topics such as this one (colours below the near-colourless range) it’s important to be on the same page with descriptions between yourself and your professional who is handling the diamond.

(and there definately will be color in O). I have had my oec set with two gorgeous CvB platinum setting, but didn’t like it with platinum and changed setting to 18k gold with platinum head. The oec is still same colour, but looks more home with yellow gold. And I adore it:love:

Soxfan, did you think the stone was very yellow when you inquired about it?
Sarah, This is not reeeeeeally an engagement ring.....my husband and I have been married for 15 years but I never had one. So, I'm finally getting the ring that I never got!!!
I do not mind a warm stone, I just do not want yellow.
Look at this one, it is beautiful, but much smaller at 7.14x6.81 but it's an I!!!
Thoughts???

I think you can safely go to J or K color in GIA graded stones and have it appear fairly white/ivory. Below that you really need to see the stone to be sure you like it. When you get down to lower colors, the setting is very important to compliment the stone color.

I like the I color one okay, but it is very out of round so you'd have to consider that when setting it. The color will be great in platinum (assuming GIA I color).

I'd want yellow gold for a warm stone, then platinum. I personally don't think pink and ivory/tinted are a good match, but I could be wrong

Diamondseeker, I have to ask, the diamond in your profile pic, what exactly is it??? I absolutely lovelove the pattern in the center. Is it called petals? I wanted that. thank you!!

Thank you all sooooo much!!! I have alot to think about!!!!

I actually prefer your O/P over the I. It's smack in the middle of either colorless and the fancy colored range, and it can look like a purposeful fancy colored diamond especially combined with the older cut.

If you want the more defined petal pattern in the middle, you might want to look in to the Old European Cut diamonds.

Ok thank you!! that makes sense!!! Is it possible to get an old European with a cushiony shape or are the they all perfectly round??

Just catching up and excited for you, @rubyjim, to hear that Ilya found a stone for you! I adore the O/P you posted and would personally choose that over the I, but also think you’ll need to be ready to embrace the warmth of the stone. So, I would have Ilya send you the stone - it would be good view it in person and see it in different lighting situations.

While I’m a rose gold fanatic, I think yellow gold will be best if you want to down play the warmth and platinum if you want to really play it up.

It’s beautiful! Personally, I’d set it in 18k yellow or 18k rose (which will have a gorgeous peachy-pink tone). I don’t think platinum would do it justice. You’ll want to compliment that lovely warm color!

Unplated 18k white gold would be beautiful as well. FYI - I have a Q colored diamond and it has a lot of yellow warmth to it. I purchased the stone for it's warmth.

chiming in to say I'd go with yellow gold. The original platinum of my stone's setting seemed to make my O/P stone go a bit grey/green. Here's a pic of a ring that used to be listed with JBG but I couldn't find it but I had it bookmarked because I liked it. Its a Q/R I think in rose gold. The contrast looks nice to me but it depends what you're looking for.

Hi Ruby,

It's a gorgeous diamond! It is warm though, fine by me as I have an O AVR which I love, it's set in white gold but it's not as big as this one which makes a difference. But the warmth is going to show no matter how you set it, it's part of the diamond, so I'd go with whichever setting and metal colour you think best as there'll be no getting away from the tone of the stone ( rhymes!)

If you're having doubts then I'd consider a smaller stone with a higher colour grade like the I you posted.

Rubyjim- I definitely prefer the O/P stone! And the reason I say yellow gold is because to me, I think yellow gold would compliment that particular stone.

So I posted about this exact ring and asked why it hadn't sold. Many PS'ers said because it should be in yellow gold, the stone just didn't go with rose gold. @Niel will remember!

Are you going to see the stone before you set it? That way you can put it next to the different metals..

I was trying to find that picture becuase if that exact conversation

In my opinion you’re not going to put it in any metal and make it look “white”

If your goal is size I’d lean into color rather than away from it. Msop has a stunning u-v color diamond that she bezeled in yellow metal and put in a white gold halo. It doesn’t shy away from the color - enhances it- and still you get to wear white metal
