Help Needed- Diamond Novice in Search of Engagement Ring

Hello All,
Coming here clueless and in need of advice. I've done my homework - reading up on the 4 C's, understanding the importance of cut, and also went into a jeweler to do Diamond 101.

What I found was that my eyes are not built for the diamond world. For example I couldn't really tell the difference between the color in a E diamond and an H diamond. After looking at black specs on the center of a 1.5 carat SI1 under a microscope I wasn't able to spot them with my naked eye after. While this wasn't particularly surprising to me, at the same time that doesn't help me much.

So I come to you all looking for advice. My girlfriend is on the petite side (5'3", size 0-2 dresses, around a 5.5 ring size, with short fingers). She doesn't wear a lot of flashy jewelery (none of it diamonds) as 95% of the time she will only wear pearl earrings, a Tiffany's sterling silver necklace I bought her, and a Cape Cod bracelet. My budget is the 10-13K range, and I'd like to get her something she'll be proud of in the size department, but I also want to make sure she is getting something quality in terms of the other C's. My question would be what is a good "floor" for the other C's as far as the grading scale. I know that my girlfriend (and her family & friends) have a much better eye for this sort of thing and I want to make sure I buy something to be proud of.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Help Needed- Diamond Novice in Search of Engagement Rin

as you have already discovered, H SI1 can be almost indistinguishable to the naked eye from higher grades. It is a pretty safe floor. You should be able to get maybe around 1.3-1.5 ct round for your budget.
