We're deciding between 2 diamonds and need help in deciding. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

#1
.90ct Round
GIA cert
(AGS 1 but .5% away from 0)
F color
VS2
61.6% depth
58% table
med to slightly thick faceted girdle
no cutlet
faint fluorescence
very good polish and symmetry
crown (angle) 35.3
pavilion (angle) 40.3
according to the Holloway Cut Advisor, all factors were graded as "excellent" with total visual performance as 0.4
$4577

#2
.92ct Round
GIA cert
(AGS 0: Ideal cut)
G color
SI1
60.2% depth
57% table
med to slightly thick faceted girdle
no cutlet
no fluorescence
very good polish and symmetry
crown (angle) 33.9
pavilion (angle) 40.5
according to the Holloway Cut Advisor, light return, fire and scintillation were graded as excellent and spread was graded as very good. total visual performance was a 1.0
$4366

Hi. You seem to have your cut adviser scores reversed. The first stone scored a 1 and the second one scored a 0.4. With scores like that, it doesn't really matter. Personally, I'd take the first one because of the better color and clarity. However, both diamonds are very close. Check to see if the SI1 is "eye clean."

Hi. Thanks for the reply. And you're right; I did reverse the Cut Advisor info. Oops! Thanks again!

An AGS 0 would have ideal symmetry, proportion, and polish. However, the second stone is only VG polish/symmetry by GIA; seems to me like quite a difference although you can still have an "ideal" cut with VG/VG. Personally, I would compare the stones side to side and if they're not noticeable different, then go with the F/VS2 since it is considered 'colorless' and has been clarity for negligible size and only slight cost differences.

You have some great potential stones.
But GIA symmetry ggrades mean didly squat.
Ask the vendors for ideal-scope images. that way you can tell the synmmetry and the minor facet length.

A newbie question but does this mean that GIA (and perhaps AGS too???) grade on symmetry is much less reliable than their grades on the clarity/color/etc??

Can you look at both stones together? With the symmetry grades of the stones, its possible that there are real differences between them in brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Definitely look at them yourself if possible, get an Idealscope image, and have the vendor look at them as well to help you make this decision. The price, size, color, and clarity difference is too small to worry about in my book. Get the stone that is most beautiful to your eyes.

Unfortunately, I can't see them side by side since both are on the Internet and on different sites.

I know the F, VS2 stone is only 1/2% (on the table) away from being an AGS 0 and therefore "ideal" stone. Would that really make a huge difference?

Thanks again for your help!

The pavilion angles are on the shallow side which will not necessarilly impact it's performance in direct light conditions but may impact it in diffuse light conditions making the stones appear darker. Before plunking down the cash you may want to view them side by side next to another ideal with pavilion angles between the 40.7-40.9 range and compare the brightness of each stone. You may be surprised what you see.
