Hi everyone

My bf and decided to go with one of my good friend''s sister''s friend who is a jewelry designer and her family owns a jewelry business. We chose a diamond thats pear shape and 1.7 ct. with a G color and SI1 clarity. The cut is very good. We went on Sunday to meet with her to choose one of the 2 diamonds she was able to get from her vendors. Well, the diamond we chose was priced at $7600 and $1200...so the total price comes to $8800. Well, my question is: she told my bf that thats the price and she cant go any lower. Theres no room for negotiation at all!! My bf wanted to spend about $7,000 and pay in cash...maybe a couple hundred more and we''d also buy the wedding bands from her... She told my bf that she has to know by tomorrow noon to send it back to the vendor...so he''s going to call her around 11...should we just let the diamond go? or are we really getting a "deal?" We went with this person mainly because we thought we could trust her and not get ripped off...we''ve done our research and everything too....advice please!!!

Which lab graded the stone?

I always caution on dealing with family member or friends of friends, as it usually isn''t a good deal. I would not rush and take your time, if they want your business, they can wait until you are fully ready and be able to price check and compare is my thoughts. If it is already over your budget, I would stick to your budget. You will find a nice stone and setting for your sizeable budget.

Hi vetrogrl!

I must admit, I'm kind of confused... is it just one diamond, a 1.7ct pear; or are you looking for a pear and a 1.7ct round? In other words, why are there two prices?

At first glance, though, I think D&T is spot on. Rushing to overspend on something you're not sure on hardly, if ever, ends well. Plus they're what, 3 degrees away? There's no harm in being a prudent customer and saying no thanks; on the other hand, saying yes and resenting your good friend for the recommendation that led to a bad purchase is not a great situation to be in...

edit, duh, setting price. i should read more carefully. still recommend waiting though... perhaps learn a little bit more about fancy cuts and ASET images to ensure you know what you're getting?

EGL graded it...we would''ve liked GIA but eh....we''re going to go back to Jewelers Row in Chicago and talk with one lady we compared prices with back in the spring...so if she said $8800 thats it...she probably won''t budge even a lil...bye bye stone for now

If you informed her of the budget and she is showing you stones over-budget I see no reason to be pressured into making a purchase that you are not comfortable with. Tell her your budget isn''t flexible and you''ll have to keep looking or spend some time saving up. It''s no "deal" if you aren''t 100% happy with the whole transaction.

Stay away from the whole friend-of-a-friend thing.

vetro, an EGL graded fancy shape + overbudget + ''friend of friend'' is really not something you should be sad about walking away from.

(to be completely (brutally) honest, you should be running away screaming)

take some time, learn some more, ask the fan-freakin-tastic experts around here about a few diamonds, and you''re almost guaranteed to find a stone you unconditionally l

ve!

I don''t think you should rush into something like this. First make sure about the type of band you want and something that would fit your style. There''s a lot of things to keep in mind when choosing a wedding band! Don''t just go with the first one you see.

Thanks everyon for your opinions! Bf is calling her today to let her know she can send the stone back...back to finding the "one" Hope everyone has a great thanksgiving :)
