What are the guidelines for the correct size? Is this correct? (I read this once somewhere):

When you take off the ring, it should require one turn and then go over the knuckle with ease.

I tried on a wider ring and it felt snugly going on, fit on my finger feeling like it won't fall off. It took one turn to remove, but then again, it's not summer. NOTE: this was after taking the rings on and off a few times too. That size is 6.75.

My other ring is a 6.75 but it is thinner and I had to buy a smaller thin band to hold it onto my finger when it's cold outside. It's annoying and even in the summer it never is too tight.

like my pants, my rings unfortunately fit well in two different sizes, depending on the season.

I've never turned a ring to get it on or off, and I never will. If it's comfortable and doesn't feel like it's going to fall off, it's probably a good fit.

A lot of it is preference. I would NEVER wear a ring that was so tight it required a turn to get over my knuckle. I like a ring that will ever-so-slightly catch on my knuckle but slide easily off - there shouldn't be much resistance. I would prefer a too-large ring to a snug-fitting one.

I wear a 4.5 ring size on my left ring finger. If I wanted to have to turn my ring before I pulled it off, I could wear a 4. All my ring finger rings that aren't my wedding set are size 5, since my right hand ring finger is a size 5 (though 4.5 fits if I wanted to do a turn to get them off), and at that size I can comfortably wear them on both hands.

Jewelry stores have sizing bands for narrow bands and also wide bands. Most people have to go up in size for a wide band, or for a wedding set that's pretty wide when all of the rings are soldered together.

People who have large knuckles but thin fingers might try to "split the difference" and choose a size that's super snug going over the knuckle, because if they picked a size that easily slips of the knuckle, it will be hugely too large for the part of the finger where the ring sits.
