I don''t know what happened... yesterday I looked down and my engagement ring was broken. 2 of the platnium prongs are bent. Thank goodness the diamond was still there! I just got the ring from Blue Nile about 6 Months ago and I didn''t insure he ring yet. How could this of happened... I thought platnium was stronger than any metel? Do you all think the diamond was hurt and do you think Blue Nile will fix this or should I go to a local jeweler... HELP!

Luckily, you didn't lose anything, and that doesn't sound unfixable. A quick look around on the BlueNile site doesn't show any guarentees beyond 30 days, but it's almost certainly worth calling them and asking them nicely to fix it. As they rely heavily on word of mouth, it's certainly worth it to them to fix it, assuming you haven't had an accident with the ring. Please let me know if they don't fix it, I'd want to pass that on to some other people I know.

It should be trivial for a local jewler to fix, in any case, if you just have bent prongs (perhaps they caught on something?). Maybe the easiest solution would be to get someone local to fix it. (As people here have pointed out, you might want to check your diamond afterwards, for your own peace of mind down the road.) The local jeweler operates on word of mouth as well

Platinum is often misunderstood. It isn't indestructable. One of its most important properties is that it is malleable. It can be shaped on molded, and will not break apart, but it can be bent. The great thing about platinum is that it can be put back into shape, without losing metal. It has a strong bond with other molecules, so it will dent or misform, but won't really wear out. A gold ring will actually wear away after time, while platinum may bend or dent, but it can always be re-shaped.

As much as I would like to say shame on Blue Nile, that is not the case. I am sure that the Blue Nile ring is not the problem.

You have hit your ring a hard glancing blow that bent back those prongs. It can happen to anyone and at any time. The prongs will either bend or snap and it does not matter if they are platinum, gold, silver or steel.

A - Everyone needs to have a jeweler to take care of things like this.

B - Everyone needs to have their engagement ring insured!

Count yourself that you did not loose the diamond or chip it!

Prongs do get damaged. They are especially at risk is you wear your ring all time time, even when you're doing rough work. Sometimes just hitting it on a counter or something though could bend them if you whack it just right.

This is a message to you that you need to insure that ring. You've had it for six months, which is plenty of time to get it insured. You were lucky this time, but take fate's hint and get that puppy insured ASAP.

You need to take it to a jeweller you trust. If the only jeweller you trust is Blue Nile, then of course ship it back to them. They might charge you for the repair, but it will be minimal, and so would another jeweller, anyway.

The one thing that you should figure out, though, is if your diamond is set in a hardy enough setting.

Do you think I chipped the diamond? I guess I will find out soon when I take it to the jeweler... I am just so astonished this happened!!!
