Ok, my son just bought this cushion cut diamond and needs to have a setting made for it. I purchased it for him from a PSer and she took it to Mark at ERD to have it inspected for me since she is in Manhattan (it all worked out so well). It is now with him for a setting.

He would like to have as much bling as he can get but has a limited budget. Would anyone like to throw out ideas? We don't want Pave because she will wear this ring a lot, most likely 24/7.

3 stone half moons?

Thanks, that may work well.

or french cuts down the shank? what's his budget for the setting? Have you checked out some of Mark's Royal T collection? So pretty!

that's exactly what I would do!

Hi budget is 1200 max.

What about tapered baguettes? Timeless and classic!

That was my exact suggestion.

(I think half-moons will give more "bling" than baguettes, though I love baguettes too. I chose half-moons for my ring because baguettes, while classic, didn't provide the sparkle that the half-moons did.)

Some ERD options:

Rather than baguettes, I would do bullets, though I actually prefer the half moons over bags or bullets.

What about trillions? Make a three stone...

He just informed me he does not like baguettes. Mark tells me his budget does not allow for side stone like half moons, trapezoids :((

For hus budget he should consider mounts from Unique Settings of New York and Stuller! I would contact IDJ. Both companies offer semi-mounts, including ones with tapers baguette sides, for very reasonable prices. I was quoted about $1000 for platinum with tapered baguettes, nice big ones, by IDJ about 4-5 months ago! That will be your best bet!

So exciting, he is getting engaged?

ETA: Just saw your message. What about traps? I found a pair on ebay I can link for you, loose. They were about $600. Offer less. Then have a setting made (though that will go higher in his budget too). ETAA: I meant trillions. And someone like Daniel M on etsy could likely make the setting for not much more than you budget.

Call IDJ, I still think they can do something for you.

If you are leaning towards a 3 stone, I would ask Mark if has any pairs of fancy cuts (bullets, half moons, cushions, trillions) in house that may be less expensive than him bringing something in. I think any of those pairs would look nice. To maximize budget, you might also consider 3 small RBs on each side, to make up a triangle, to give that tapered look.

Too bad he doesn't like baguettes- I have a set in a vintage ring I would have been happy to hand over for a steal to a young couple in love :)

Aww, I hate it too!

IDJ. I KNOW Yekutiel can work with that budget. Tell him you want half moons or trillions and a three stone setting.

I had the seller leave the stone with Mark. So what should I do?

Call Yekutiel when he's open (Monday). See what he says he can do for you. Tell him it's with Mark and see what he proposes to get the stone to him. They are both in NY. But NY is a big place I have no idea how close or how far apart they are and what the logistics are, but I'm Yekutiel would.

my thoughts exactly. IDJ can work with him :)

Very exciting Bright Ice - how amazing that you are able to be involved with this monumental decision for your son and his future FI! I'm thrilled for you - and I have only dealt w IDJ once, but from all we've read here on PS, he's def the "go to guy" when you are on a budget.

I'm sure this kind of thing happens a lot - one vendor moving items between another vendor. I doubt it will 'offend' either one and they will know how best to transfer between each other.

Did your son have a preference for diamonds or coloured stones as side stones, if it becomes a 3 stone ring? Is the future bride involved in any of these decisions or will it be a surprise?

Exciting to follow along this thread!

Without looking at their addresses, I think they are both right there in the diamond district.

My only warning is that I'd rather have a fine quality solitaire than a cheap setting with diamonds on it. I'd rather get the good quality solitaire and save up more money for a nice quality diamond wedding band later. You know the old saying...you get what you pay for (usually).

Thanks for all of the response. Would the Vatche solitaire line be in his budget for this size stone with IDJ?

I don't think Yekutiel will stear you wrong. I think a half moons would be gorgeous. It is a 3/4 cushion so I don't think the sidestones would have to be huge to look proportional. Can't wait to see what he comes up with.

good thought. You could also go the route of getting sidestones in a cheaper setting now and upgrading the threestone setting later. I don't think you'll make a bad decision.
