Hi everyone!

My wife and I are expecting our first born on Dec. 17! I''d like to commemorate the occasion by giving my wife a ring with our baby''s birthstone in it - a blue topaz (sky blue). She likes antique style rings and I really like the look of the following Richard Landi rings, but I''m having a hard time choosing. It will be platinum, in a size 5 3/4.

What do you think?

Richard Landi LDR975

Richard Landi GER354

Richard Landi GBP549

I''m working with Good Old Gold on the project.

Thanks!!

Eric

I personally like 1 and 3 leaning towards 1 more. I think that the halo gives it more of a vintage antique feel. Any of the choices though would be beautiful. Congrats on the new addition!

Those were all lovely. I would have a hard time choosing, but I like GER354, and GBP549 was a close second.

oooh how sweet of you, I love #3 on your list. I just love the band look.

I like # 1 best. # 3 is in second place.

I like #1 and #3, but #1 the most. Very classy!

Ditto! I also feel like bands are more wearable, but that may just be me.

Boy, I really like them all but I guess that #1 comes in first and then it''s a toss up between 2 & 3.

I like the 3rd one best, and then the 1st one.

Numero Uno!

What a lovely idea as a gift for the new mom. #3 is beautiful, but it''s hard to know what size your wife''s finger will actually be after baby arrives, and she loses the baby weight. I''m pretty sure that one will be difficult to re-size down the road. #1 is also beautiful, that would me my choice. Congratulations on the coming arrival!

That''s a good point. I didn''t consider the resizing issue on #3.

I''m getting a quote on #1 now. #2 and #3 were each about $4K, so it should be close.

I''m also trying to find out what size blue topaz will look best in #1. I want it to look elegant and classy (not a huge bauble and not a tiny stone).

What size stone do women normally get in a ring like this?

Thanks!

Eric

I like the first one, being a solitaire kind of gal. I would also consider blue zircon instead of blue topaz for the stone. They''re both December birthstones. I believe zircon has a higher refractive index than topaz, making it a more sparkly and fiery stone. One of the colored stone experts can check me on this, but I think it''s true.

I like #3. And what a sweet husband you are!

My vote goes for number 1! It''s just stunning!

Zircon has a hardness of 7.5, refractive index of 1.78-1.98.

Topaz is harder, at an 8, with a lower refractive index of 1.61-1.63.

I''m not sure if this difference is negligible...?

I do tend to like the color of the sky blue topaz.

I''m really leaning towards #1 and #3 now. LoL

Does anyone have an idea of what stone size would be best for #1?

I like #3 but am now worried about the resizing issue.

All right...here I go getting all personal :) I''m just wondering if you think this will be your only child? If so...I like 1 and 3. If you think you will have others, how about going with a smaller ring with alternating diamonds and birthstone so you can add others when siblings come along?

You are truly a great Husband and Dad to plan this surprise!

Hi, Makandaddie. That''s okay.

I''m hoping to have more, but my wife is 40+ and it took us 2 1/2 years to get pregnant. This will be a very special, spoiled baby! ha ha!

Which is why I don''t want to mess this up!!

Congratulations on a new baby!! I also like #1, but does your wife have a preference? I have both band and solitaire colored stone rings, but I find that I wear the solitaire style more.

As to size of stone, what is your wife''s ring size, and again, what do you think she''d like? Some of us ladies like bigger stones, while others would feel a stone that same size would be too ostentatious for casual wear. I wear a size 7, and really like stones in the 8mm range. In fact, here is a sky blue topaz I recently received, and it''s 8mm. If you troll the Colored Stone Forum, you might find some ideas - keep us posted!

The 1st design appeals to me the most and seems to be the most antique looking. Is your wife "in" on the process or is it going to be a surprise?

Congrats on the baby. My son was due mid December also but he decided to wait around until Christmas eve. It was snowing Christmas morning and carolers came to the room..... It is was such a magical time for us and I tear up just thinking about it. I hope the birth of your baby is just as joyous! Congrats again.

Thanks for the congrats! We''re both very excited!

My wife isn''t "in" on the process yet. I think I''m going to try to keep it a surprise if I can. She also has a close friend who shares her sense of style, so I''ll have to consult her as well.

She wears a size 5 3/4, and really loves her 3x diamond engagement ring (center diamond is 1.78 carat), and wedding ring (5 more diamonds at .3 each).

Wow, that''s a pretty stone!! 8 mm seems like a nice size. Is that similar to a couple carat diamond ring... or how does it translate?

I have Good Old Gold checking with the designer to see what size stone he recommends for #1.

I''m also a lover of antique inspired rings and my eye loved the 3rd ring (the band)...very pretty! BTW the 17th of dec. is my husbands bday...Sagitarius are good and funny ppl. Congrats on the baby

Thanks, Akmiss! Your December birth sounds magical!!!

I hope ours is just as special.

I''m leaning towards surprising my wife. We were shopping for new clothes and she did stop by a jewelry case and pointed towards a similar design that she liked (to #1), so I think she''d be happy with it. I also like #3, though, so it''s tough. #3 looks very "wearable".

Love #1, but like many said, she would probably be more prone to wearing #3, especially with all the expected diaper changes coming up! Congrats!

What a sweet man! I hope my husband is as thoughtful when the time comes!

It looks like I''m going against the grain here, but I actually love #2. Something about the carving really speaks to me. I also like the band (you could even add your b-stone and your wife''s b-stone), but the poster who said your wife''s ring size could change had a good point.

As for the blue zircon, I believe that was the "original" December b-stone, and that blue topaz is a replacement stone b/c blue zircon can be hard to find. It''s a beautiful stone though. There''s a thread about one in colored stones right now. You should check it out

i agree with the wearability of the band over the other styles! i didn''t wear any rings for a long time after i had my son, also a dec. baby. too afraid to scratch and poke him! i just started to wear my asscher cut sky blue topaz with a halo of small diamonds, and i have caught myself scratching him with it occasionally, thankfully, he didn''t notice! he''s 2 1/2. ( also watch the earrings!- no dangles or hoops, i still won''t wear them!)

Okay, an 8mm round diamond could be a 2 carats or a little more, (depending on the depth), so an 8mm cushion will be more. Given her ring size, I think an 8mm might be too big, unless you know that she really likes bigger stones. Keep in mind that the halo in #1 will add to the finger coverage, so I''m thinking that something in the 7mm range might be more to your/her liking. And seriously, if you start a thread in the CS forum, you''ll get lots of help with stone choices!

Cool. Thanks for the help everyone!

i really like number 3!!!

i know i''m going to be in the minority on this one but for some reason, i think number one and three look a little manly...am not too sure why, though....
