Hi everyone,

I'm doing lots of research to help prepare me for when the time comes to select a diamond for my engagement ring.. To help with this, I'm frequenting the boards regularly, watching lots of educational videos on youtube, and regularly browsing through the PS recommended vendors websites to see whats available.

In my travels, I found this diamond listed on one of the PS recommended vendors sites, and I'm trying to figure out why it is priced as it is (around $5400).

I've tried to attach some images below, screen shots taken from the site - I hope they work!

Now, I can see that in theory, the numbers all seem to be within recommended parameters. It scores a 1.0 on the HCA.
I'm going to take an educated guess and say that the idealscope is pretty good, but not perfect. There seems to be a little leakage, and it isn't completely symmetrical. The vendor has also provided some H&A shots that show the arrows are fairly jumbled (but, it is NOT being marketed as a H&A diamonds). Having said that, for someone who doesn't need the best of the best cut and isn't fussed by H&A, it seems acceptable.
I do notice that there is strong blue fluorescence. I feel that this might be a big contributor to the price, although if the vendor could confirm that the fluoro didn't have a negative impact on the diamonds appearance, I wouldn't have an issue with it.
I have also noticed that there is a needle very close to the girdle of the diamond - is this something that could potentially interfere with the structural integrity of the diamond? If the potential is there, I realise it would need to be assessed by an unbiased expert to determine that for sure - but I wasn't sure if this might impact on the cost also? As an aside, from the pictures it seems to be eye clean.

Any thoughts? Just to clarify, I'm not interested in purchasing at the minute - just wanting to increase my knowledge base! Help me out!

It's priced appropriately as far as I can see. There is another stone priced around that range. And a few for a few hundred more. It's the strong blue that's discounting it. As long as the Fluorescence isn't having a negative effect, I'd say go for it.

Ah, I think I've been spending too much time looking at various signature cut RBs - the only I colours that seem to pop up in those searches seem to be spot on the 1 carat mark (for around $6000-6500), I forget the price jump that comes with a super ideal cut!

The inclusion near the girdle wouldn't spark alarm bells? I think inclusions need to be my next educational focus..

You can call them and ask them.

It could be fine. Or it could have maybe an odd tint. You never know. But they will tell you.

Also, that's not a super ideal.

A super ideal has precision cut perfect hearts and arrows. I'm not going to post the link to the stone, because you haven't put it on hold.

But that diamond does not have perfect arrows. And the hearts are all different from one another. It is not a super ideal.

Just because a diamond has hearts and arrows and good light return does not make it a super ideal.

You need perfect hearts and arrows combined with ideal light return.

Since you want to learn. Thread that discusses what a "super ideal" is-- the difference between hearts and arrows diamonds, and diamonds with ideal light performance, and super ideals that combine both aspects : https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/likelihood-of-finding-a-signature-super-ideal-diamond.174235/

You will hopefully find that informative and enlightening.

Oh, I know its not super ideal - in my original post I mention the arrows being off, and it's not being marketed as super ideal or H&A - I just meant that only looking at super ideal cuts previously may have skewed my perception of 'cheap'. However, I will definitely refer to that link youve posted, thank you! And I hadn't thought about tint (despite watching the GOG tint video just this week!), that could definitely have something to do with it.

Thanks white rock, you might be onto something with the tint - I hadn't thought of that one :)

It may not be the tint. Don't assume. Just call.

And yes, if you were looking at super ideals then the pricing will be different. Also keep in mind AGS0's command a higher price per carat than GIA Ex. AGS commands a premium.

You should still find the link I provided to be good information.
