I know this is going to tickle a lot of fancy out there. Last August (2008) I bought a Tiffany''s Legacy ring. The price was at $10,700 (That''s not with tax...and yeah, I know what your thinking...lol =( ). I know this is a ridiculous story, but I have to sell the ring. I know I''m not going to get anywhere near what I bought it for, but I just got a quote today from a cheap jewelry place around the bay and they gave me a horrible price that is almost giving away the ring. I need suggestion on what to do and how to sell for at Least some sort of worthy price. I''m trying to attend a police academy in September, and I''m unemployed right now and need to come up with at least 5 to 6 thousand. Even if I can''t get that price, I want something at least ok.

Please be gentle on me. Tomorrow I''m going to call a few places (a auction place in SF called Bonhams) and a few other places. I need any brainstorming idea''s! I know the people on here are great at information, and I would love to find out what you guys might think.

Thank you in advance for any help, I truly do appreciate it all. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Thank you both for all of your help. I have looked into both of these places (Bistros, and signed prices.) I''m still seeking to know how exactly each one of them works. Signed prices has given me a fairly decent quote, and for the birsto I''m going to have to find out maybe tomorrow a little more with them. Do you have any experience with Bistros or have known or anything good from them? I''m very interested in looking into them, but I am just very nervous about making such a large sale like this. I have never done this before.

What do you guys think of something like Cragslist? Is that even an option in a market like this for Jewelry? or should I just stick to these suggestions? I''m just asking? So far both of these look awesome.

Advertising on Caigslist is free and you don''t have to split the proceeds with them.
You have nothing to loose.

Meet the buyer in a public place with witnesses.
Accept only cash.

While you may make more money through a private sale on Craig''s list, I would never feel comfortable selling such an expensive item that way. I have no experience with Bistro but I have purchased through signed pieces. SP is an extremely reputable company. I trust them implicitly. It is a vendor that knowledgeable consumers seek out when searching for a deal on designer jewelry.

For what it is worth, I do not have any experience as a seller on Diamondbistro, however, as a buyer I''ve had several very pleasant, successful, problem-free transactions with site sellers. These have all been non-jewelry-pro folks, several people I know well, and there has been one whom I did not know at all. Of course, I can not speak about everyone who uses the site, but, I do know that there are several very knowledgeable, fair and honorable people who use Diamondbistro, both pros and non-pros.

If timing is an issue, you may just want to talk with some of the recommended professional internet vendors and go with the best quote you get.

Good luck – both with your ring sale and with your future in Police training.

I have consigned several items at Pearlmans and it was an easy process. Of course, consignment might not be a good option for you if you need cash quickly because it could take time. some of the other suggestions are good ones too. If Signed Pieces will give you cash and it''s fair to you they might be your best bet. they move their Tiffany items very quickly.

wow. I appreciate all of your help on here. But just for whatever it''s worth to mention, I would like to tell you guys that I have advertised on CL and the responses have been overwhelming. I don''t know if I priced it too low or what, but I am getting like 5 to 6 inquires a day. I''m meeting two people tomorrow from around the bay area. Just thought that I would let you guys know, and I''ll keep you posted on what it goes for and how the sales go over in person.

OK, but be safe!

Many great suggestions have been posted. I''d *for sure* stay away from Craig''s List when selling jewelry! Too risky. Too many crazy people.

Don''t take $100 bills from anyone unless you''re in a bank and they look at them.

Don''t take a money order either (often faked) and bring someone else with you! Don''t want to be robbed in a parking lot for the ring ya know?

Ditto. Be safe all around. Best of luck.

Umm.. we will call the police if we don''t hear from you in a few days. Be really careful.

I appreciate all the help and concern from you guys. I have taken into account most concerns (I know a lot of police officers.) and I have taken proper precautions to make sure it''s a safe and secure transaction if the buyer is interested enough to want to make a purchase. I will let you guys know how it goes in the future and when I eventually sell the ring.

Ok, so the buyer decided to go in another direction...=( and i am running quickly out of time. I have shopped it around the bay area and they are all giving me prices that are extremely too low. My only choices now are Ebay, continue with Craigslist and cross my fingers, or go with Signedprices which is actually giving me a pretty ok price. Not exactly what I wanted, but enough to not make me feel stupid. I have a few questions about SP''s though and it''s making me sick to my stomach thinking about sending a 10,700 dollar ring across the country. But I have talked to someone on the phone and they have told me to just insure the ring for what I bought it for (Through FedEX) and to get a tracking number and all of that. Is there any other advice that I should know about before sending this ring off to signedprices??? I appreciate all the help from this site so much...Thank you all for all your consideration and advice!!!

Check with SP as to the best method of sending the ring to them and follow it to the letter, make absolutely certain it is insured.

Insured through FedEx right? Or whoever I send it through?
