You can try a Malaya garnet.

I have been looking for days...at all the sites I have seen listed, but no luck with anything this color. Do you know of any vendor that might have some?

Some vendors do not post everything they have in their inventory, especially lapidaries. I think perhaps Gene or Barry might have a couple pieces of rough left. You’ll find them at www.precisiongem.com and www.acstones.com respectively.

It might be difficult to find a malaya garnet that is truly that pastel to be honest.

If it's the delicate color that attracts you, you may be better off looking at tourmalines. I think they come in more truly pastel shades and are probably easier to find than malaya garnets of that color and saturation.

I think Bob Kast may have tourmaline in stock that could work.

I might just send emails to Dan Stair, Barry Bridgestock, and other PS cutters you prefer with a photo of the color you're looking for and see if they have anything they think could suite.

My malaya looks exactly that color. Check with Barry Bridgestock to see if he has any material that color. I got it from Barry, he called it imperial malaya and it is light in tone like that diamond too. It's cut in his supernova oval

Malaya garnet has that colour, but in some lights goes pinker.

The rough I have from Tanzania runs from that brownish/peach/pink to soft pink depending on the light.

Cheers,
Lisa Elser

Tourmalines are also doable but with the low RI, it will not sparkle as much as a garnet. The attraction of a diamond, even if brown, is the dispersion.

A little bit different but I have not gone through all the inventory. The stones are very nice and I have been eyeing this store for a while. They have a beautiful peachy tourmaline, slightly different color but very attractive. If you have the energy to go through 6 pages you may find what you need or check it from time to time - they often add up to the inventory.

Not bad either...not an arm or a leg still!

I believe this person has a very good reputation on the PS. And the prices are stable so I shall probably put this next purchase from Tan on hold and see what this store has.

Try looking at Morganites. Some are that colour (others more pink) but it won't break the bank!

Brownish morganite?

Here is a morganite I found. What do you think?

Beautiful Morganite! Color and cut! Very much looks like the color of the diamond you posted.

Ah, I know this quest!

Trust me, the morganite won't be anything like as sparkly as the Malaya garnet will be.

I also seem to recall Zeolite complementing Gemnut (aka Weblorn) on the colour of some of those pale Malaya Garnets. I'd test drive the garnet if I were you.

Speaking as someone who has morganite that colour, and a tourmaline.

And in my second breath, I should add that Lisa Elser who posted earlier in this thread was the source of my tourmaline (expertly cut by Peter Torraca in this case. I would ask her if she has any of the same coloured rough that she could cut for you.

Taylorbug,

Please don't take this the wrong way, but that photo was taken with an extremely bright light (see the white reflections). Whereas the colour may resemble the diamond, the performance will be sadly lacking.

Re: Help me find a stone this color....(update)

ok, I found this pair....and the vendor is willing to separate and sell me one for a ring. It is 6.50mm. How does that compare to diamond size? will it appear like a 1ct diamond? How will it look in a bezel halo?

rwmalaya.jpg

Yes, it will appear face up like a 1 carat diamond. It depends on who you get to bezel it, as not all bezels are created equal, but at least Malayas are very sparkly. I don't think any natural stone can look like diamond, except sphalerite, but the color is what you really want.

Here's my malaya when it was in a rose gold halo, just to give you an idea. It is more pastel than this in most lighting. This photo was in the evening when the sun's rays are more bent.

tl....what do you think of these stones? Do they look ok? Do you prefer one over the other? For this type stone, do you think I should prong set it versus bezel? Thanks for all your help!

I posted a photo above to show you. The reason I suggested malaya is because it's a brownish pink like the diamond color you like, and it's very sparkly. Since you asked what I personally think of these stones, I'll be honest, I don't care much for brown stones, and the brown in my malaya, even though there was pink, did not allow me to enjoy it that much. I do own a pink champagne diamond which I love, and even though there's brown in it, there's nothing like the dispersion and scintillation of a diamond, so the brown in there is really not a big deal to me. I sold a malaya recently, and I would love the sell the one I have now. It is loose in my collection. It was one of those gems I tried to force myself to love, but I couldn't. However, what one person likes, isn't always the same as someone else. You may love the stone. I wish I could wear it because Barry did an amazing job cutting it and it does sparkle quite a bit, but nothing really compares to a diamond in my eye. If you really want that color, I would save up for a pink champagne. They're not that super expensive in around a 50 to 70 pointer.

I would prong set it in all honesty because you want a lot of light to get in there.

Sorry for all the questions...but would you mind telling me where you found your pink champagne diamond? I found a couple on Leibish & Co. the pink that is listed in the initial post is from their site. It is a 40 point oval. They also have another that is 1.04 but is more brown and less pink and also has IGI.
Would you mind posting a picture of your pink champagne diamond?

Taylorbug, I bought my stone on ebay many many years ago (around 15) and the dealer is no longer selling. It is 52 points, here is a photo. I never had it certified because I didn't pay a ton for it, around $800, but it is a real diamond (had it tested), and I wear it a great deal, unlike my poor Malaya.

I really love Malaya garnets. Maybe TL, the reason you are struggling with yours is the way it's set. I know you tend to go for the real bling bling look with all the diamond halo's etc. but the Malaya's and other more earthy colored stones may look better in a more casual setting. To me, it looks out of place in that setting. My wife would never wear one of these halo style rings, but she does wear a lot of casual earthy things.

Basically Gene, without realizing it, you described why I don't like Malayas. I don't like earthy colored gems. The only brown gems I do like are diamonds, and I have some, which I love, but I cannot accept brown in a colored gem. We are all different, and perhaps Taylor can accept a brown colored gem. Maybe she needs to see a nice one in person first. She asked for my opinion, and I gave it, and also some food for thought. I probably shouldn't read minds, but she may like a malaya in person, but if she saw one next to a nice champagne or pink brown diamond, she may not like them so much anymore. :? I could be wrong.

. . . so Gene what gives you the idea I like a lot of bling? LOL!

TL,
Best I take that brown Malaya off your hands I think! I can see how much it's tormenting you :naughty:

Taylorbug I happened on Dan Stair's website and he's currently cutting a zircon that might be promising colorwise. Might want to take a look: http://www.customgemstones.com/

Ha ha Gailey. Well unfortunately, it's going to sit in a gem box forever unless I can get rid of it.

Just a thought but is this going to be for an everyday ring? If so then Morganite, Zircon, Malaya Garnet, Tourmaline etc., won't probably be hardy enough (unless you're super careful). So that basically leaves you with a brown or brown/pink diamond that unfortunately will cost more than you probably want to spend.

I also agree with TL that even though I own a couple of Malaya's I really really really don't like them. They tend to shift in colour and will look more brown during the day (which I personally don't like). At night however, mine come alive and look like a totally different, and gorgeous, pinkish/purple/peach gemstone. I've also found them incredible difficult to set in the correct colour gold specifically because of this colour shift. So, whilst a Malaya may perform nicely, my Morganites outshine them each and every time because their colour is stable in all lights!
