I found a vintage ring on a site of a vendor who is, as far as I am concerned, reputable by PS standards.

The ring features the following OEC as a center stone and is surrounded by 3 three single cut diamonds on each side (0.06 ctw).

Diamond Dossier by GIA:

Old European Brilliant

Measurements: 5.73 - 5.88 x 4.00 mm
Carat Weight: 0.83 carat
Color Grade: L
Clarity Grade: SI1

Depth: 68.9 %
Table: 50 %
Girdle: Extremely Thin to Medium, Faceted
Culet: Slightly Large

Polish: Good
Symmetry: Poor
Fluorescence: None
Clarity Characteristics: Cavity, Feather, Indented Natural, Chip

The ring is about 4000$ which is a lot of money for me, so I'd like your opinion before seriously considering to buy.

Thanks so much!

OEC and other antique cuts need photos and videos, if possible. Do you have any to share? I think people can help more with that information.

Agree with Eliza. We need lots of photos and videos to give you our opinions.

That‘s the photos on the website. I don‘t know if they could take more pictures or make a video if I ask.

It looks like the prongs have been reworked from the original. But that's a good thing, in my opinion.
It's a beautiful ring, but maybe overpriced.

Is this a U.S vendor? Seems overpriced to me. It is a pretty ring.

I think it's a bit overpriced as well. Take a look at Ivy and Rose for comparison shopping.

I think a video would help, because I have a feeling that this one is going to be dark under the table. You can see it in one photo face on, second photo. I would like to see what it does in a video. It's possible it's just a bad shot or could be an issue.

Yeah I think there are going to be too many off facets at a time if the photo is representative. Ask for a few videos outside and inside to get a better idea. Ask the vendor to move the ring slowly so you can visualize the on/off facet pattern.
It’s a pretty setting.

I don’t like the facets of this stone and agree it’s overpriced.

Are you in the UK Kalliope?

The stone has a 50% table so the crown can't be too high, and yet the depth is 68.9%. This most likely means there is a lot of weight hidden in a very deep pavilion.

Old World Diamonds have by far the largest on-line inventory of OECs. You can easily comparison shop for a similarly graded diamond on their site, although you would have to add your estimate of the cost of the setting.

I am not the OP. I am a total newbie but I love old cuts and I am interested in learning. Can you tell me what you dont like about the facets? Is it something that is personal preference, or is there something we should look for in a facet pattern? Again, not the OP, just total curious wish to learn!

ETA: I had been actively (read: obsessively) shopping for OMCs and agree it seems over priced for .83 and L color. That said, if you love it, then it's priceless, but i think you can do better.

Please don’t take this the wrong way because the ring is lovely and if you love it you love it. I just don’t see anything special about the stone or the setting to justify that price. It is also hard to tell from the still pics but the culet looks nice and fairly well centered which I like for a ring that is also symmetrical in style.
I’d ask for clarification on this pic. Are these reflections or defects in the gold?

I think 4K is a hefty price tag for the ct weight and setting. I agree about looking at Ivy and Rose.

this is what I look for in an OEC:

Again, the faceting pattern is personal preference but this is what I love.

Depth way too high. There's no perfectly head on shot of the diamond, but i suspect it has a full nail-head and turns completely off at the same time. $4000 is way, way overpriced. That diameter is equiv to approx 0.75ct.

Thanks everyone for your very helpful answers!

I felt that it was overpriced as well, but I have no clue when it comes to diamond prices, escpecially the older cuts.

I have been looking at Old World Diamonds and also Ivy and Rose and you are absolutely right, their stones are far better priced. I really like the setting and would love to get a vintage one, but for 4k I guess I could get a smaller, but nicer stone with a similar custom setting.

Are you in the UK Kalliope?

Europe, yes, but not UK. I saw that you listed a beautiful OEC ring on LT, hope it sells soon :-).

Thanks! The original jeweller has made a reasonable offer so I'll probably go with that for convenience, though I would have preferred it to go to a loving PS home ;-) If I was buying now I would buy from the US, there just aren't many old cut options over here.
