Okay so here is one idea of using Adams ring and modifying the heart design...thank you starrylight! Plus making it 8 prongs. Try to remember I am NOT an artist. ;) And please be honest!

I actually like this, but I see what you mean about it looking like little hearts. I like these little hearts better than the very distinct hearts in the original setting, these ones seem to be a little more discrete. I think the issue is going to be that with most settings that have fleur-de-lis in the basket, they are in-between the prongs, and that might be hard to fit in-between when there are 8 prongs. But again, I am by no means an expert, so I am sure his bench would be able to determine that better than I could.

I agree! I think these kind of "suggest" hearts but doesn't feel as precious ifkwim.

I don't see fleur de lis working on an 8 prong setting at all. I think it works best with 4 but might be possible with 6 on a really large stone. I really like your last drawing and do not think it screams heart like the one with the full hearts between the prongs does.

Good. I have one other idea I drew up that I will post in a little bit.

Okay...here is the other option working with Adam's setting.

It's pretty simple, but I like how it makes little M's (a special letter for us).

I am going to post them one after the other for comparison sake:

I like this one the best! Simple, yet elegant and it has a secret meaning.

I like the one's with the M, and it looks like a V, too, in case that is a special letter! :appl:

I really like the first one, Ms!

I like the one with "M's" too... look regal like a crown!

Wow, I really like the design with the M's, looks great!

I really like the "M" setting!

I also like the "M" setting.

Thanks so much for the feedback on my setting idea. The M's may be a go! Adam loves it too.

So, here is the update: I am moving forward with 3.33 M  . It is the best I have found and truly is gorgeous. I can always upgrade to the smaller table combo I want later so I feel good about it.

BUT, this setting thing may put me in the looney bin. Instead of paralysis by analysis it's more like paralysis by millions of gorgeous options....all of which I seem to need to consider. I feel like something will eventually stick and just feel right. It may be the M design from above.

I was on loupetroop yesterday and saw GemFever's listing for her OEC and her setting may have just set me back a few days. ;) I love it too. Ugh...the options. Here is what I saw.,

THEN, I looked through my saved threads and found another one I LOVE in the same style...

Frickity frackity! Someone needs to save me from myself!

I like the 10-prong setting better - it's very similar to the "M" version you have designed. :wink2:

Better than the M version or better than the 8 prong?

I also like the 10 prong antique hand forged ring, the M's look scrunchy and like little M's all around it.

Where do you want the diamond to sit? It should in theory sit up higher in the designs Adam has done, I notice it is sitting down lower and the head of the ring is shorter in the pictures you have attached.

I would say I want it set medium low. But, I really like the flow of the two rings I just posted...I may want to "swoop" up to the basket though a little more than plunking it on top of the band if that makes sense...I like the way GemFever's flows. I think the 10 prong could be set up a little higher if need be.

Okay...well I just talked to Adam and told him I love the design we came up with and I also love the two links I just posted. So, basically the M design, but with some more roundedness to the profile of the ring (like GemFevers)...also instead of the split in the shank where it meets the basket I think it will just gently curve upward...no split. I think I just had to modernize it a little bit...it was feeling a little too antiquey to me.

He is giving my ideas to his designer and they will make a CAD. I am really exited and nervous to see it!

When that starts up, I'd like to invite you to the "If you are waiting for custom design to come in..." thread. :wavey:

YAY! I can't wait to see the CAD. I bet it will look spectacular!

Thanks armywife! I hope so. I kind of feel like I dumped crazy amounts of information/inspiration on Adam and said "ok, go figure this out" . He doesn't seem fazed though...he said he has made more than one custom design off a sketch on a napkin.

Valmanin,I bet it's going to be stunning! I am so excited for you and cannot wait to see it on your hand!!! :appl:

I am sure he has dealt with his fair share of us crazy PSers already, so he knows what he is getting into! ;)

Hey, V.
Whatever you decide, that's going to be an outstanding ring.
I just posted a similar dilemma and then saw your thread. I'm also looking at the owd heart setting.
My two-tone concern is different from yours. I'm wondering if a white gold head and yellow shank would just look like a yellow gold ring. My stone is much smaller than yours, a 7mm, so the white head might not be noticed.
Adam suggested circles instead of hearts, but I'm not sold on that idea.

I will go check your thread.

Looking forward to seeing CADs!!! :appl: !

+1 for the 'M' design.

Thanks everyone! The CAD should be done by Tuesday/Wednesday of next week. :appl:

Re: Help me design my setting :-) UPDATE with CAD

So, after all that deliberation, I decided to go with a modified version of the M design at the top of this page. Here are the rings I used for inspiration:

swoopy.jpg
10_prong4.jpg
10_prong3.jpg
gemfever.jpg
pha23-8.jpg
stuller.jpg

And here is the CAD:

cad_1.png

So here are my questions for you all:
1. 10 prongs look okay or should I go to 8?
2. Should I taper the shank in thinner at the top?
3. Should I have them bring in the whole bottom or the basket a little more to create more curvy swoopyness?
4. The little circles. I am thinking of ditching them...I kind of like the more modern look without them. But, if I do keep them Adam said he would throw in little rose cut diamonds. I kind of like that idea too.

Any other thoughts or ideas welcome. I have never looked at CADs before. Adam did stress that the whole thing would be more delicate especially the prongs which would be super tiny claw prongs.

So here are my 2 cents...
1. I would go with 8 prongs, I think 10 is overpowering.
2. I would leave the shank as is.
3. Yes, I would have them bring in the bottom of the basket. It will also provide more defined "M's"
4. Yup, I would scrap them too. With a solitare I always prefer a "clean" look. Less is more IMO.

I'm loving the design so far though, you must be so excited! :)

I say 8 prongs and get rid of the little circles.

It's going to be sooo pretty !!!! :appl:
