Help me decide which setting for which stone

Hi all! I’m on a mission to reset and recycle everything this year and have already started. There are two stones that I am trying to figure out what to do with. I know the type of settings I would like but I just don’t know which setting to apply to which stone. I have an emerald that is emerald elongated shape, and an asscher green tourmaline that I bought from @peppermintpatty . For one of the settings I want to do an art deco halo. With a miligrain bezel around the stone. For the other I want a three stone and I plan to use lab diamonds. If I three stone the asscher I’ll use traps; if I three stone the emerald I’ll use other emerald cuts I think. I would want to bezel all. Can you tell I like bezels?

I originally thought I would put the halo around the asscher but I’m a bit conflicted because that’s already a really big stone. And the emerald is smaller so maybe the halo would bring more presence. For the 3 stone I would use yellow gold and for halo yellow gold for bezel and possibly white or platinum for the rest.

Thoughts or ideas welcome! I am attaching photos of the loose stones as well as inspiration photos.

The tourmaline is dark in tone, so I think a bezel might overpower it. I would do a prong setting for that gem.

Very lovely stones!!

So do you think that a gold bezel will make the dark green darker?

I am concerned a bezel will make the tourmaline black out.

I do like the square shape with the halo so that is why it’s hard to decide. Like I really love @swaye2010’s aquamarine

Definitely 3-stone for the EC Emerald with a yellow or rose gold bezel.

I would set the Tourmaline in a bezel, however, that's because I bezel everything except for 1 ring!

Personal preferences and all that.

DK :))

I also +1 the EC Emerald for a 3-stone!

For the tourmaline in a halo - are you opposed to airgaps between the center stone and the halo? you might be able to bezel/open basket the tourmaline and then with the airgap and halo, maybe there will be enough openness to avoid "black out"? (single stone photo as an example of bezel + airgap. second photo is a setting I tried on at Joe Escobar a long time ago included in case it gets some design element thoughts going)

+1 for the 3 stone inspo for the emerald. I think the elongated shape of the emerald lends itself to a 3-stone naturally. That said, I think a 3 stone with open prongs works well for your tourmaline if it's as dark or darker than this emerald from JR Colombian.

The middle inspiration picture is one I have saved too, I think it’s gorgeous and would look lovely with your emerald.
I would go for a 3 stone for your tourmaline, I agree with everyone else that it is a lovely stone but looks to be darker already. My sapphire can go dark and it is bezelled but it is open underneath the bezel to let light in, perhaps you could do something like that if you are set on a bezel. 46107A13-C39D-437E-B44D-0C800CCB7178.jpeg

Yes not sure it will help though as the design is not remotely what you are after. I think it would be easier to do it with a bezelled 3 stone. You could just do neat cut outs around each bezel. D6F94FA2-B412-4B8B-909E-CFF5E91DAD9B.jpeg B02B71F3-5690-4C42-B190-1860864CF0D7.jpeg

While we’re on the setting topic, if I did the three stone emerald with bezel, does anyone know if DK sources lab stones? And would it be worth it to get my own from Ouros or Neo in terms of cost-saving?

@Mreader We definitely have the same taste! I have an emerald cut lilac spinel that is going to be set in that setting - too funny!
I feel the tourmaline looks darker than It did in person. At least on my screen. I had planned on doing a 3 stone with the tourmaline. I wasn't sure yet what shape sidetones. I like to bezel all of my gemstones because I am anal about chipping or cracking them.
David does source lab diamonds. I am not sure he sources shapes other than round.
I think both stones would look good with sidetones or with a halo. If you are concerned about the tourmaline being too dark with a bezel then I would halo that and do a 3 stone with the emerald, which by the way is beautiful! Good luck deciding!

@Mreader The one in your first post with the 2 baguettes, one on either side of the center stone. All 3 stones are set N/S. I think it's rose gold. I just love that it's classy and it looks like I could wear it everyday.

I do know DK sources lab diamonds as he did for me. There’s so many choices (reading in the lab forum) but I don’t know if all those choices are available thru him. I just asked for color/clarity H&A equivalent and don’t know too much more about them than that.

as for designs, well that’s where this gets fun!
(just don’t zoom in too close - ha!)

OMG @Rfisher love you for doing this!!! That is so awesome!!! Any chance I can talk you into doing the reverse (halo on tourmaline side stones on emeralds).

you are welcome!
it’s just a free cut/paste app. pretty rudimentary compared to what some use.

I am so grateful! It really helps so much to be able to visualize!! And yet it's still hard to make a decision because I like both lol. Because of you fellow PSers I can admit this - since ppl are worried about the dark tourmaline I thought of finding a different asscher gemstone just for this art deco halo design - thus creating three rings instead of two :lol-2:.

Update and seeking more counsel. I definitely want to do a three stone with the emerald and I ordered some labs. I’m still mulling over the tourmaline based on what ppl said about it blacking out. If I did a faux bezel with prongs would that have the same effect? If so any other ideas for this tourmaline? I’m posting more pics of it in a holder in different lighting (indoor, outdoor shade, sun).

Just catching up with this thread - can't wait to see your emerald three stone when complete! This thread is so timely for me because I actually have an elongated EC tourmaline that I was thinking of setting as you are doing with your emerald. But after reading about the concern with bezels and darkening of the stone, I am re-thinking.

I love the idea of a faux bezel for the tourmaline! With a diamond halo? I've seen that done with a diamond and it was gorgeous.

Sure @Mreader ! This was my first loose stone purchase - about 6 years ago. I'm finally getting around to thinking about settings for this stone and also a lavender spinel.
Just took these pics this morning - tried to get some different lighting shots.
Purchased from Gemline:
3.24ct Brazilian Tourmaline (11x6.2, I don't have a depth measurement)

Nice! But yes also a darker stone. Which with my green I didn't even THINK about when I thought about setting. Silly, because when I was searching for an emerald, I was all "it's light, will it darken - I hope - in a bezel?" Haha but when I have no issues with the color it doesn't enter my mind!

Yes, I think I was drawn to the cut and the forest green color. Your tourmaline has the beautiful blue-green. I found these on 1st dibs. They're emeralds, but prong set with halos.

I'll think I'll start a thread for the stones I need to set, too! I need help!!!
