Well, I have no idea if you're talking about eating celery on Saturdays or studying GIA salaries...but if you don't learn to spell correctly, I'd say you wont earn enough salary to keep you in celery, even on a Saturday!

Harsh Patel,

I noticed your screen name may be of Indian origin. It is great to have a world in one community.

If you are trying to ask...

After a study in GIA how much salary should you expect

...just hang on. I am sure some of our pundits here and Gemologists will chime in and exchange their experience with you. Many we are blessed to have here have many years of experience. I think the question is relative to the long road they have traveled to get to where they are today. But we are glad they are here with us.

Run your next reply through spell checker. It may help you get a better reply. §

Hi Harsh Patel!

Unfortunately, I don''t have an answer for your question, however, it is a good question and I would be interested in a response from one of the Pricescope experts or someone else who might know as well.

I have been considering a career as a gemologist and what it might entail so this might be good information to have if I seriously decide to pursue it and leave my present career.

Does anyone have an answer for Harsh Patel?

Whoah! Looked up your link and thought "well sign me up!" but then noticed the monthly salary is not in US dollars? right? Interesting thread, I have always been curious.

oops sorry forgot to clarify. the figures stated are in HKD.

There are quite a few different ways to make a living in the jewelry business and a degree in gemology from GIA is a piece of the puzzle for quite a few of them. Most start out in sales and will make anywhere from $12/hr to about $20/hr. GOOD salespeople can make quite a bit but the key skill here isn’t really gemology and they mostly don’t teach it at GIA.

Lab graders in the US start at about $14/hr or so and move up to that same $20 range. Elsewhere it will vary with the market. It’s an extremely difficult job to get by the way. It’s also worth noting that most lab graders do not start as GIA graduates. The labs, including GIA, prefer to train their graders from scratch and GG’s tend to develop too many bad or at least inapplicable habits.

Gemology isn’t the primary skill set for appraisers either but people routinely ask about it because that’s the popular aspiration. It would be difficult to succeed as a jewelry appraiser without it. A store that can support the workload will pay $15-$30/hr. for people with the right credentials.

Auction houses, pawn shops, customs, cruise lines, insurance companies, and many others will hire gemologists and the rates vary quite a bit depending on what other skills you bring to the table. The top pay, of course, comes as a self-employed merchant (as is the bottom). As with several of the above, gemology doesn’t seem to be the key skill set but it does come in handy.

To answer the original question, yes it is possible to get a good job in the jewelry business but for most people it works best to start by getting the job and then get the education as a way of advancement rather than to try and start at the top.
