I am debating about two different diamonds. Interested to hear your opinions.

Diamond one:

$5,000
GIA .93 carat
E color
SI1
Very good cut
Very good polish
Good symmetry
Table = 61
Depth = 59.5
Fluorescence: None
Characteristics: None

Diamond two:

$5,200
GIA .92 carat
G color
VS2
Excellent Polish
Very good good symmetry
Table = 59
Depth = 59
Cut is not stated as it is an old certification.
Fluorescence: None
Characteristics: Cloud

Thanks

Im a newbie but they both sound lousy to me. Everyone here says very good cut is garbage, and the table is big on the first stone, so I would say it is out. Second stone, old report with no cut rating? Veto.

I would keep looking. Check out more H/I color VS2/SI1 for more size for your dollar.

Yes ! Cut is your most important factor. Its what makes a diamond perform. It determins brightness , fire, & sparkle. A well cut I colour si1 is going to look 1000× better than a poor cut D IF. Does not matter the size definately look further in to cut. Which vendor are you looking at buying through?

What you said, Mavin!!

They are actually from two different local places. I know everyone on here swears by buying online, but I just feel better buying locally. I think I might just hold off still.

I would not buy either diamond. Based on the information you gave, the likelihood of either being worth $5000 is very slim.

Regarding buying online vs in person, I can honestly say that the idea of buying a diamond at most physical stores seems so off-putting to me now because of the limited information available there. The online vendors recommended by PS members provide ample information to make an informed decision so you can be confident that what you are getting is worth the money you pay.

I do think it's worth it to make a trip to a physical store to get a sense of the acceptable color and size.

Those specs of those two diamonds are very typical of what is sold in most jewelry stores. I understand your desire to buy locally, if possible. Make sure you take the time to educate yourself so you know what you're buying. Educate yourself by asking questions here, so that you can buy a well-cut diamond locally. The first thing I'd recommend is for you to take a look at any "ideal-cut" diamonds in your area. I'm not sure where you're from, but if there is a Jared's in your town, take a look at the Jared's Peerless collection. Compare the Peerless ideal-cut diamonds to diamonds with good or very good cut grades. You should be able to see a difference. Also check to see if there is a store in your area that carries Hearts on Fire diamonds. Spend some time comparing the (very expensive) branded ideal-cut diamonds like Peerless and HOF brands, to the stores' GIA very good or good cut diamonds. The goal is to educate your eyes about what a well-cut diamond looks like. Next, ask the sales reps in the two stores you've been working with if they can get any GIA triple Excellent (excellent, cut, polish and symmetry) diamonds in for you to look at. Most stores stock good and very good cuts because most customers don't know the difference and/or don't care. Finally, if the two local stores are able to source GIA excellent cut diamonds for you, make sure to post the numbers from the GIA grading report here (or the carat weight and the GIA report number) and you'll get advice on the price and quality of those stones. You can buy locally in an educated way. Make sure any store you buy from has a return policy! Do not buy from any store that does not allow you to return the diamond.

Thanks for the tips Lula. I am in the Midwest and we are actually getting a Jareds soon but probably not soon enough to help me. The E color diamond did have a lot of sparkle but I was worried about the other factors. I'll try and see if he can compare a Triple Excellent tomorrow. Should you really not consider a diamond if the cut is not excellent?

How about buying yourself an idealscope and taking it into stores?

Deuces , to start off correctly check out some of good old golds videos on ideal cuts. I bought online after seeing the vids vs the jeweler stones and you can see a huge difference. Like i said cut is what makes a diamond beautiful. Also be aware that even buying online your diamonds come laser inscribed to match any certs you get. Any lady would be much much happier with a smaller ideal cut stone with lower colour clarity. Than a larger poor cut stone with higher color clarity. I almost fell in to this trap myself and im so glad i did research and watch vids. Plus by buying a really great cut that os rarity on its own as less than 5% (i beleive correct me if im wrong) of diamonds in the world are cut to such beautiful standerds. So yes def check out good old golds videos just search good old gold hearts and arrows and there are a lot of vids he has about clarity cut colour etc etc it is very very educating. And i would not buy those diamonds either. Hth

Oh also be aware that the lights at a store can make a diamond sparkle much better than it will anywhere else. As soon as you step outside youll wonder what happened to that lovely stone you saw in the jeweler. Ideal cuts peform well in all lighting conditions :) and they are beautiful

Okay so I have a new diamond I am looking at.

Price: $5380
Cut: Excellent
Color: G
Clarity: SI1
Depth %: 60.1%
Table %: 61%
Carat Weight: 0.93
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Medium
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 6.34 x 6.31 x 3.80

Thoughts? I know the table is a little big.

Thanks
