Help! Is this a good J diamond?

IMG_2883.JPGIMG_2884.JPGIMG_2885.jpg I recently purchased a yellow gold engagement band with a round solitaire diamond from Blue Nile. Here are the stats (as rated by GIA):

1.6 carats
J color
VVS2 clarity
Excellent cut
Strong blue fluorescence

I picked this particular diamond because of the size and because it's in yellow gold, I thought I could go for a lower color rating. I don't know if I'm going crazy, but I'm worried it appears too yellow or more generally, not as nice as I was hoping. What do you think? Will a diamond in yellow gold always look a little yellow in certain light?

It gets a 4.9 on the HCA so I think everyone here will tell you to look for a better cut diamond. It has a 62.8% depth and 36.5 crown angle, recommended is 60-62.3 and 34-35

I recently purchased a pair of AGS Ideal cut J color diamonds with Medium Blue fl, they did not look yellow at all. Face up they were pretty white and more of a "warmth" from the side profile but definitely not yellow. They sparkled like crazy!
 
This diamond scores 4.9 on the HCA, which is not a very good cut. A J-color diamond that has a better cut (HCA<2, and excellent light performance confirmed by IdealScope or ASET imaging) should not appear as yellow as this diamond does.
 
First, the stone is cut too deep. Although you bought it for the size, you are not getting a good spread.
Second, it is not well cut. See the areas I circled. It is dark and yellowish, despite the diamond exposed to bright and white light. Rotate the diamond and it is just mushy in those areas. A well cut J will reflect this white light and mask its natural yellow tint. See some Bluenile signature stones, and you will see strong light return and crisp facets under the table throughout.

Since the diamond leaks light, you are seeing more of the tint and yellowness of the setting.

I would return and start fresh, since you are not 100% happy . If you need help with finding a good J or I, we can help. mush.png
 
Thank you all so much! I wasn't sure if it was because of the J color or the strong blue fluorescence... I wasn't even thinking that it may be the cut.

It's a little smaller at 1.4, but its 1.4 on the HCA, which is considerably better than the current diamond. Thoughts on this one?

But how about this, unless you have a specific reason to have IF clarity.

Here is 36.5/41, just like your original stone. Again, it is yellow and dead under the table, other than occasional flashes from certain angles.

If you compare these two, you understand why the cut is important.

I like that 1.47 JA. I also found this one on BN: https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD09095534. It's smaller, 1.3 and an H, which again, don't know if that will make a huge difference in yellow gold.

Just noticed the JA one is rated by AGS. Everything else I've looked at is GIA - do you think there is a big difference, especially in terms of color?
 
The general consensus is they are about equal in grading color and clarity, although some may disagree. AGS's cut grading is far more sophisticated and superior.
AGS is often used by boutique dealers who are specialized in super ideal cut stones, including JA, BGD, GOG, WF, CBI, etc.

The H VVS1 is a good choice. Contact BN and put it on hold.
