Help! Is this a chip or an indented natural

Happy new year everyone!

My heart is shaking. I was examining my engagement ring yesterday after i accidentally hit/scratch it on a metal piece.

i am wandering if it is an indented natural, a nick/chip or a bruise? if it is an indented natural, then why it is not set near the prong.
i can feel using my nail tip the slight unevenness on the surface.

This is a diamond of about 2ct. I know it may be good to match it against whatever inclusion stated on the cert. But I just do not have the certificate with me now. i dont even know if it was there before. i have been louping it for hours today... i called my husband who is currently overseas to let him know about this, and he has been comforting me. i feel terrible that i might have damaged such a precious gift from him.

i would also like to ask if diamond ring like this is for everyday. Apparently, i don't wear it often, and now maybe i will just keep it in the jewel box.

Indented natural. I always have them set this way, not a good idea under a prong because the prongs take the most force in case of a blow. Metal will not scratch your diamond. Yes, they can be worn every day, so enjoy your rock as you like! If you are still worried, take your ring to a reputable appraiser.

And don’t think you are crazy, many of us often think we damaged a stone, I know I do and loupe for hours. I remember the first time I saw two indented naturals on a stone. Phew.:))) you have no idea what ensued, even though I was pretty sure I was seeing indented naturals.

Diamonds can and do chip but really rarely and it does not look like this. You would have to be very unfortunate to damage one during normal wear. Still. Do not wear your ring during heavy sports, gardening, etc., you will be fine.

Oh and please send a better photo, not Blurry then we can be sure.

Thank you so much @ Sunstorm

Yes, you understand the feeling! i totally freak out when i first saw it.
i dont have a clearer pic now. i will probably take one later and update in the thread.

One more question, is it common that i can feel the indented natural with my finger nail?

Having been playing with my iphone and loupe. probably this is the best photo resolution i could have for now.

As far as i can tell, here is nothing goes inside the diamond. But because it is near/on the girdle edge, not sure if it is a chip caused by a sharp metal piece..

Appears to be a tiny chip to me - becuse it is at a main thicker part.
but if it is a natural it will be marked as such on your certificate.
Also I can not see the orientation of the diamond in relation to the ring band?
The safest place for anything likely to increase chipping risk is very close to a prong, next best is north or south. Our arms hinge from the elbow so never on the E-West sides. N-S means we must move our arms from the shoulder - less likely to result in damage.

Looks like a tiny chip to me as well. You could have it polished out, but tbh, unless someone says it may cause structural damage, and unless it reflects around the inside of the diamond, I would just leave it and not worry about it. Well-loved and often-worn diamond rings collect little dings from time to time. Don't let this stop you from wearing it.

I think the answer depends on your nature Jamie.
You will be able to feel it with a finger nail - so it means you can always check to ID your diamond.
If it is going to keep you awake at night, then do something:

1. have it turned anti clockwise to next to the prong, but not under it.
2. have it polished off - Jann Paul may be able to help you?

but have you checked the cert to see if it was always there?

Hi Garry, i just came back from JannPaul. I met Jann. He is very kind and helpful.
Due to some personnel reason, i cant share much of the details here.
Once again, thank you so much for your help.

On your newer pix I see it. Now it looks like perhaps a very minute chip or surface reaching inclusion. Perhaps a cavity? Do you have your report with you to show us the clarity plot? Also let us know what you find out. Metal again would not sctatch your diamond but this setting exposes a large area of the girdle and is very high, so technically damage is more likely than with a lower and more closed setting. Should not be a problem to polish this out. BTW, yes it is possible to feel some indented naturals with your nails, as well as to feel a chip. Best of luck!
