Help identifying stone

I've been wondering for some time what kind of stone is in this ring/signet. Perhaps someone could help me out? The ring was made in the 19th c. in Italy. Thanks a lot!

First and foremost pick is carnelian. Remote second guess is some sort of a polished shell (like the brownish part of a cameo) which the Italians craft so beautifully.

Thanks! I read a little about carnelian and it seems to be it - perfect for a signet ring as something may be carved in it.
