Can anyone help me identify the stone in the ring below (not sure if it is even possible from a photo)? I received this ring several years ago as a gift but have no idea what the stone is. I never had it looked at by a jeweler. I think it is pretty soft since I scratched it today when I threw it in my purse.

My boyfriend is very proud of the photo he took with his new camera. It showed more detail than I could see under the loupe.

Not really possible from a photo. And it''s really hard with the reflection on the table to get an idea of anything as well. As for softness/hardness it is very easy to scratch any stone if you''re not careful with it.

Having said all of that, I''d guess a garnet from the size and color around the edges, but that''s really a wild guess, because the reflection on the table makes it very hard to see the stone at all.

It sure is pretty, but I think you''d really need to take it to a jeweler/gemologist to really know.

It is almost impossible to tell for sure from a photo... my best guess is either garnet or rubellite tourmaline if it''s natural, but it could be a number of synthetic materials or glass.

You''ll definitely want it examined in person by a gemologist for identification.

I'm going to take a guess that it's a synthetic or glass if you scratched it that easily.

What is the setting made of? How old is the piece?

I am pretty sure that it is not glass but who knows. Maybe I will bring it in to get checked out. The scratch may not have been from being in the purse but maybe I just never knew it was there. I can''t see the scratch with my eye and I can''t even see it under a 10x loupe. The camera caught it and that''s when we noticed it.

How big is the stone? Is it set in white gold or platinum? Do you have more photos in better lighting? It looks like it could be a synthetic, but synthetic corundum does not scratch that easily. It''s really hard to tell from that photo. Do you notice any inclusions within the stone? That would help separate it from synthetic.

Just to clarify, my suggestion of synthetic is separate from my easily scratched glass suggestion...

I believe the setting is 18K white gold - there is a stamp that says 18K 750. I have some more photos but apparantly the ring is pretty dirty. The stone is too dark for me to see any inclusions with the naked eye ot the loupe. However, in the photos - you can see there are some inclusions (although most of it is dirt).

Regardless it is a very pretty ring. That being said your best bet is a jeweler. Gorgeous though!

It''s diffcult to ID a stone by picture alone - this is examplified by the various "guess this gemstone" games we have played during the last few weeks here on Pricescope.
