Help I just bought a ring...was it a good choice...I only have 3 days...

My husband just purchased a 2.17 ct round solitaire for me.
All we received was an appraisal report from UGL and signed by a GG (GIA). Well, and the ring.

It just doesn''t seem big enough to be a 2.17. Maybe because my hand is not petite?
Anyway, the appraisal says that it is

7.80-7.88 x 5.51 mm

Does that sound big enough to be a 2ct?
I know that ct is the weight, but they usually at least look big. I can''t get a good picture. They are all blurred or too sparkly to shine back.
It is a F color I1 clarity. White gold, tiffany style.
What would you expect to pay for this ring (what would have been fair price?)

I only have 3 days to return the ring if I am unhappy (I don''t know where he got it, some store in CT)

Any help is much appreciated.

a 2 ct is about 8.1 mm. 2.17 should be about 8.3? 7.8 ish mm is about 1.75 cts.

Based on the measurements you've written this stone has a 75% depth. A diamond of this diameter and depth may weigh 2.17 cut it will look like it is 1.75. It will not refract light as well as one that is properly proportioned... should be around 60-63%. But there is more to it than that.

For a round stone, it will look smaller than 2 carat cause it is very deep.

For this large a stone it is best to take it to an expert. The measurements could be wrong, and if so that would affect an opinion.

Secondly, if the measurements are inaccurate, what else on the report is?

If your in CT. look up Cynthia Konney, New England Gem Lab, she can report what it is or isn't for you. It will be worth the cost to be sure and have complete peace of mind.

Diamonds need to be seen.

I actually live in michigan. I didn''t know how to calculate any of the specifics. I plan to get it to a jeweler tomorrow to check it out but we are so far away from anything close to a gem lab. It does look like a deep diamond. I thought that a 75% depth was bad for "sparkles" that the reflection of light doesn pass properly, but this thing is sparkling like crazy.

It is a pretty diamond. I didn''t think it looked like a 2ct though. It is quite a bit smaller than the ones I have seen on here, even the 2.03 cts...

Thanks..I am a little depressed now. Maybe I will return it. I hate to be a pain in the butt, but I wanted a big ring.

this is another example of if it works don''t fix it... who cares what the numbers are if it ''sparkles like crazy'' unless the size is an issue... again, who cares if it looks smaller because it is deep if it''s doing what you want it to. if it isn''t doing it, get rid of it quickly!

I just feel like I got screwed I guess. My ring looks smaller than a lady I know who has a 1.8 and that is not what I wanted. The ring is pretty, but I am a little disappointed with the fact that I specifically told her that I wanted a ring that was a 2 ct and LOOKED like it was! I don''t know what my obsession is with making sure it looked like a 2ct but I have one apparently!

I guess I am just SO tired of that "friend" waving her "almost 2 ct" in my face. So to get a 2.17 ct and have it look smaller kinda ticks a person off.

BUT...LIKE you said...it is a pretty ring and it has sparkle and fire and I should just be happy!

The price sounds way way way too good to be true. Definitely have it appraised. Then you will know what you are dealing with! (It is pretty in the pictures!) And don''t worry about your "friend," just make sure you and your fiance are happy with how it looks and the value.

I am very skeptical about your ring, if the price your husband paid is really $2550...if he is telling the truth, there is definitely something wrong. I would take it to an appraiser immediately. If it really is a 2ct round with a decent cut, KEEP IT! You can't get a 2ct decent cut I1 F for much less than somewhere in the $6000-7000 range. Either the sales person screwed up, or they sold you something completely different and told you it was a 2.03.

Buyer beware on this one!

The dimensions you mention are characteristic of stones around 1.75 carats, so if having the look of a 2 carat is really important to you, this stone won''t cut it. But, seeing as you already said it''s pretty, if you can get comfortable with it looking like 1.75 and if it independently appraises at a quality that is okay with you, it sounds like a fantastic deal.

The stone is certified by UGL. The appraisal says 17,300. It is an I1 and I do plan to go to a jeweler tomorrow just to double check. The appraisal report is signed by a G.G. GIA so I believe it is real, but the size...I don''t know about that. I guess I will have to have it checked.

That is why I wanted to keep it because even at a 1.75 it was a good deal. It is really hard to decide...send it back and look for a bigger (visual 2ct) or keep it and save a ton of money!!

You can see a couple carbon spots in it and it looks pretty darn real. It was purchased from a pretty big store- reputable...

Oh well. I guess I will see what the jeweler and my actual friends think. I couldn''t get a hold of any of them. They are all diamond purchasers so they will be able to give me some insight too.

that's an insane price for a 2c stone!! especially an F, even if it is an I1.

i would definitely get it checked out. was it clarity enhanced? if so then possibly that could account for the super low price, but i don't know if it would account for THAT much.

but honestly i don't care if it's a big store he bought it from, who would sell a real 2c F I1 diamond for $2550? that's just unbelievable, literally!

if by some miracle the stone does check out (take it to an independent appraiser and pay the $150 to have it checked out by an unbiased expert), then someone made a mistake...i'd maybe get the stone recut...hehe. at that price who cares if it looks like 1.75c or 2c. it's a steal. literally.

on the PS search engine there is a 2.25c F I1 EGL for $5000. also a 1.75 F I1 EGL for $6000. you can see the skepticism that $2550 was supposed to be the real price.

Ditto on the independent appraisal, don''t believe the free appraisal it came with. Get an experts outside opinion for peace of mind. Also, UGL isn''t as respected as GIA or AGS...so it might be lower in color and clarity. Either way, once you get it appraised and you love it...then don''t worry about it looking a little smaller than your friend''s ring.

I get a laugh on here sometimes because if you get a diamond cheaper than white an online vendor sellsit for it''s "Too good to be true ".

You got a good deal because the depth is large and not ideal to most folks. That''s why you got it that cheap.

I was in new york last week. I went to pay a visit to their lab, since it is right in the diamond district. I had them "pregrade" a stone that was supposed to be I1 I. They said it was SI1 I. Just pay attention to their grading...Unfortunately I fear you wouldn''t get the same grade from GIA, HRD, AGS or even EGL USA.

It really depends on what kind of I1 it is. If it was a good I1, then probably $9-11K. For an average and quite eye-visible one, then about $6-7K.

Good Deal????????? Improbably good. Where was this purchased? Many of us would like to see how many of these unbelievably priced diamonds we can buy ourselves. Somethings not right here. Sorry for casting any doubt on this, but 2.17 carats, even reasonably cut stones cost WAY WAY more.

It is an F I1 clarity enhanced. It may look like 1.75 because of the depth.
I had it checked today by a Certified Gemologist GIA, she verified it is in fact a genuine diamond...It was clarity enhanced...which I already knew and didn''t mind. The color is for sure an F and there is no denying the inclusions, but they are not in the table and not that big so it is an I1.

I don''t pay retail for ANYTHING. I hate the word retail. It just means costs more. Besides, the mark up on diamonds is extreme. My uncle is a jeweler and told me that he could get me a 2 ct for 2-4k but he lives so far away and is always so busy... I saw this ring and decided since it was right around where my uncle said he could get me one for...I just said..the heck with it.

BTW. I would nicely post the website where I purchased this for anyone interested in buying a diamond at a wholesale price, but I would absolutely hate to push a "fake" diamond into any of your hands.

I am feeling a little attacked by all the comments about it. Yes, it may sound unbelievable, but fortunately for me...it is not.

To those of you who offered opinions on whether it looks (and measures) like a 2ct- THANK YOU. I was just curious about the measured size of the ring.

Well, my potential earring stones are about $2500 and .70 cts. each. This one has to be prrrrrretty low on the 4 C's scale to be at that price. I'm not sure your friends would be impressed with a bad quality stone just because it was large. I know when I go to one of our local jewelers, the wife of the jeweler occasionally waits on me and she has a big rock of at least 2 carats but is is cloudy and unappealing. I always wonder why in the world they chose that stone. It isn't pretty at all.
