I am helping my partner decide on the best e-ring... and am sooo confused. Reading some of these postings is helping.... I thought i was set on an Asscher cut, saw one by Danhov that was gorgeous, now I''m not so sure.... cushion is appealing too. I''m open to hearing any opinions! Thanks!

Go to a jewelry store and try on all diffrent shapes, see what suits you.

Have fun!!

I feel that''s all I''ve been doing! Ha! I''m certain I''ve ruled out the Oval, Round and Princess cuts. Most jewelry shops don''t have pear or marquise on display.... I''d like at least a 2 Ct but I guess between the Asscher and the Cushion, I''m lost.... And I like the halo effect, although it feels like it''s put around the center stone to make it appear larger... but is that a bad thing? Thanks for your reply!

I''m also like the idea of recycling, buying vintage pieces, but who has the time to look? anyone have an idea of great vintage jewelry store in LA? Also I''m going to check out more jewelry stores on Ventura this wknd.... I definitely want pave....

Here are some links to some of the PSers halos. Maybe it will give you an idea if that''s the cut you like! They are all beautiful! I myself have a cushette diamond.

Just type in the search box "cushion halo" and "asscher halo" and you''ll pull up a TON more than I posted for you. Sorry, I got a little ring happy there for a second...I considered a halo myself at one point!

How large do you want it to look? Marquise do face up quite big, if you check the size comparison thread, I posted one next to a princess and a emerald cut...

One thing to bear in mind, Asschers are known to look small for their carat weight, so you might want to take this into account when deciding.

Is there a way to find out through the receiver''s relatives what (she?) wants as far as shape? Enlist some help there finding out behind the scenes..if possible. This is a hard decision and I know where you''re coming from. I made sure I bought from a place with a very good trade up policy, and have traded many times over the years all kinds of shapes. But that''s me.

Sometimes a diamond shape looks really good "in the case" but altogether different on the hand.

I guess mainly I''d go for what SHE likes. I''m thinking he will want this to be a surprise, or does she know he''s looking?

Good luck!

Have you seen radiants? If you are considering cushions and asschers, you might like radiants too.

I'd just try them on, give it a little time, and the answer will probably come to you.

Guess what, Singlestone is in the LA area - several PSers have gotten beautiful antique or antique style rings from them!

not sure why that isn't a link, try this:

Solely based on the fact that:

1. A 2 carat stone is important to you and
2. You'd like a halo to make the stone appear larger

I'm going to suggest you steer away from asschers for the e-ring (though a RHR down the road might be perfect). While cushions and asschers are both antique cuts with greater depths than rounds, pears, marquise and other modern brilliant cuts, a 2-carat asscher will most likely appear smaller than a 2-carat cushion. Not just because asschers are usually cut a tad deeper, but also because of the faceting. An assher's step cut tends to draw your eye inward towards the center of the stone, while a cushion's facets, whether they are modern brilliant facets or antique chunky facets, will reflect light in a way that gives the stone more volume.

Also, there is the halo consideration. In my opinion halos serve a couple of purposes: 1. To give the appearance of a larger stone and 2. To add some extra sparkle around the stone. A third purpose is to accent the shape of the stone or do the opposite--change the overall shape of the ring (round brilliant in square setting). Asschers in halos are tricky--many like the clean, sleek lines of an asscher and to put it in a halo can either create a nice contrast between the stark asscher pattern and a more sparkly (that's a technical term, right? :) border or if the halo doesn't work it can sort of take away from the clean lines of an asscher. A halo around a cushion is much safer, though. It accents the nice pillow shape and provides some extra umph in the size department as well as some additional sparkle. Just check out CrookedRock and MrsSalvo's recent, beautiful cushion halos.

I've said this in the past and who knows, I could be wrong, but I think that in order to love an asscher forever, you have to be head over heels in love with them because you make a sacrifice in size. If you're on the fence, I think it's better to go with a safer choice.

This is an interesting thread . . . I''m dealing with some of the same questions right now, and the advice so far has been educating me!

So, a cushion will typically face up bigger than an asscher of the same size. Would a radiant face up bigger than the cushion?

I''m not sure about radiant vs. cushion...both are deep and while the cushion has more antique faceting as opposed to the crushed ice appearance of a radiant, I''m not sure if that would affect the appearance of spread. I''m not sure how much the clipped corners of a radiant would affect it, either, I think that might be one where you''d have to compare two next to each other. Maybe some PSers who know more about radiants will chime in.

Thank you NewEnglandLady! This was incredibly helpful....

This is the 2ct asscher w/ halo setting I tried on. The designer is Danhov. It was exquisite on.... What do you think of this one?

Are you in LA as well? I''ve heard a lot of mention of Leon Mege, but he''s in NY! Are there comparable platinum smiths here in LA?

I dont think anyone can really help you decide on a shape of stone. You need to choose that yourself. The best way to do that is to look through the entire top thread on SMTR, and note down which shapes you prefer, which settings, etc. then go to a local store and start trying them on to see what looks good on your hand. Sometimes we love a stone shape or setting on paper, but it doesn''t look good on our particular hand/finger, then we end up loving a completely different shape/setting because it looks fantastic on our hand. You have to try on until you find the right shape/setting for you. Enjoy shopping!
