Hi there! New to the forum. I want to get an engagement ring for my girlfriend and surprise her in the coming month. I know she wants a cushion cut. But I can't seem to determine which one is a good one. I know that L/W should be close to 1.0. And I want a D clarity. But everything else, I am clueless. My budget is from 11K to 12K. I saw one on jameallen that I think is good. Can anyone give me some advice?

If I'm reading this right, I think you are looking for an eye-clean, higher-colored stone, with an Ideal cut.

There are many different flavors of cushion, so I've tried to give you a mix below.

Here are some nice options for your budget:

1.253, G, VS1 (probably my choice of the bunch)

1.11ct, F, SI1 - Brellia

1.35ct, F, VS2 - August Vintage Cushion

1.3ct, F, VS2 - Modern Cushion

1.092ct, E, VS2

1.5ct, H, SI1 - Modern Cushion (confirmed eye clean)

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will definitely take a look at all of them. Could you explain to me why you choose these? Sorry I'm trying to get a better handle on all of this. And one more question was there anything particular wrong with the one I had found on James Allen? Just so that I know what to be looking for.

Re: Help! I can't choose a cushion cut diamond to save my l

There's nothing "wrong" with the stone from JA. I think that you can do better though - that JA one seem a a little "flat" to me.

The stones that were recommended are the cream of the crop from a cut quality perspective. And that is what counts. It doesn't matter what color or clarity it is if the cut is poor and it doesn't sparkle. You really don't want to compromise on cut - it's what makes the diamond sparkle. And an ideal cut stone will look bigger and whiter than a less well cut one.

Take a look around at the stones that were recommended and others on those sites - you'll get a better idea of options available.

AH! thanks for the advice!

The one you picked is leaky.

Wow thanks! That guide was very helpful. Maybe I should have search the forums for more info before posting. But I do appreciate the help.

Re: Help! I can't choose a cushion cut diamond to save my l

Unfortunately the video is not working right now. But after cruising through GOG and some other websites, with better knowledge after reading the guide, I believe I can make a better decision.

I think my girlfriend would love an antique cushion brilliant. Maybe a branded one from Victor Canera or GOG. With a budget of up to 12k I think I can find one haha.

If anyone has anymore suggestions, I'll be more than thankful.

Re: Help! I can't choose a cushion cut diamond to save my l

At first I thought I had to get a "D" color to get the best diamond. But after all the advice and education I now understand that is not the case. So my selection will not be limited to only "D" color.

So I think I found one that I like.

in a Peggy Setting.

What do you guys think? I have had a major headache for the last week trying to find the right diamond.

The stone you picked looks great. Normally, I would advise against the VVS2 clarity, as being overkill, but BGD is offering a 10% discount on VVS2+ stones, with promo code VVSCD10 , so it may be worthwhile here.

Just for comparison purposes, here are a couple of other stones you could get from the same vendor, at the same price as the stone you had linked:

1.530ct, F, SI1

1.533ct, G, VS2

Ohhh. I like that F! And the G. Either of these give you more size with no loss of anything visual!

Re: Help! I can't choose a cushion cut diamond to save my l

RockyRaccoon: the 10% off was exactly what attracted to me the stone. At around $14K I think it would be a good choice! Now I need to find a CrackerJack Box. Do they still sell these at grocery stores? Plan to put the ring in there.

Re: Help! I can't choose a cushion cut diamond to save my l

What's the price difference for the two? They are around the same carat weight.

Re: Help! I can't choose a cushion cut diamond to save my l

Did you decide against antique cushions? The two you're looking at are modern, hearts and arrows cushions.

Re: Help! I can't choose a cushion cut diamond to save my l

The Brian Gavin is $16,720 with 10% off and the Goodolgood Brellia is $12,821.

I saw the video from Goodolgood.com comparing the Brellia with the Antique and I like the way the Brellia looked. I have been going back and forth from the two, it still might change if I don't pull the trigger soon!

Yes, they still sell Crackerjacks in a box. It's usually 3 boxes taped together.

Wish I could find a prize like that in one of my boxes!

Re: Help! I can't choose a cushion cut diamond to save my l

First let me thank everyone for their help and advice. This experience was an eye opener. Never had I thought that selecting a diamond was so difficult.

Now to the good news. I finally purchased a diamond. After reading so many posts and articles, I decided that I was educated enough to choose a loose diamond that I would be happy with. I decided not to pay the premium for a branded cut and use the savings for a bigger size. So here it is. Hopefully I did well and the gf loves it. I liked the fact that I was able to look at the diamond on the JA website. And I choose a simple Pave white gold for it.
