Hello PS’ers!

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here (I’m keyboard -shy =)2).

I learned a lot researching and reading on this forum when we bought my Princess cut diamond back in 2008 (I had RB diamonds previously and wanted something different). I had intended to come back and write up a report, but so much happened that year (bought a new house, had a destination wedding, affected by a hurricane, etc.). I have to say that, I thought I was a perfectionist before, but after reading up on PS, I became so much more OCD when it came to diamond selection. The wealth of knowledge and resources helped me choose my perfect, as ideal as can be stone.

It was very tough to find a well-cut 1.5 Ct. E-VS1 or higher grade at the time. I really thought that was going to be my forever ring….BUT…

DH has been pushing me to upsize for our 10-year anniversary (last year) and before that, a “push present” for a few years now, so I’ve been finally considering. But only if I can find a diamond I love better than the one I have which is actually a very tall order. Basically, I'm looking for the same exact diamond, but just in a larger size.

We’ve been calling and scouring the Internet for months now (since Jan.). I didn’t know that 11 years later, it would still be this difficult finding a well-cut Princess cut, perfectly square diamond, especially one that was 3+ Ct. and D or E color (I'm very color sensitive) with no or faint fluorescence.

I finally came across one that I like on paper (with the exception of the slightly larger table, which is what made me a bit hesitant), and have run the numbers through the AGA cut calculator and got the following results (in comparison, my current diamond is 1A throughout):
  • Tab Percent: 2A
  • Crown Height: 1A
  • Girdle: 1A
  • Depth: 1A
  • Polish: 1A
  • Symmetry: 1A
  • TotalGrade: 1B
I would like your opinion on the ASET and IS images:

Many thanks for reading!

I'm no expert so take my opinions with as large a pinch of salt as you need ;-) :) but I think it's 'not too bad'.

Green and red shows light return, which there's quite a bit of, and the faceting/contrast patterning is not unattractive.

I'm not sure about the leakage (white) around the edges of the area under the table, though - it could be that this creates a dark ring or a 'quiet' area in real life.

Have you seen the stone in your post in real life? And assessed it in different lighting conditions? Being able to do so will mean being able to check actual performance with your own eyes :)

You can compare the ASETscope and Idealscope images to the in-house 'A Cut Above' stones at Whiteflash, which have excellent light performance - there are three above 3ct at the moment, with different faceting styles for your consideration:
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/compare/?idnos=4133768,3986317,4119198

They are all lower colours, though, but WF might well be able to custom-cut a stone for you if you like what you see.

Brian Gavin Diamonds also sells well-cut Princess stones, but they only have one that isn't 'virtual selection' right now:
https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...0.606-i-vs1-princess-diamond-ags-104062164015

Again, you can compare the ASET image on the report (although bear in mind it is a computer-generated image on the certificates) and contact them if you are open to custom-cutting :)

It looks pretty nice to me. Have you seen a video of it spinning...if you have a link, please provide. Does this have the same number of mains as your
current stone? Do you think you will ever want to upgrade in the future?

Thanks for the suggestions. I think what makes it difficult for me to compare when it comes to the ASET images is that most of the comparison pictures are computer-scanned/2D images, whereas the one that the diamond dealer sent me are real/3D pictures. , When comparing the IS image, it looks to be very saturated and perfectly symmetrical to me. It's it ASET I have a hard time with.

However, I found this link and when I compare the image to it, it seems to be closest in match to the right image under the "Ideal/Best": https://beyond4cs.com/grading/aset-reference-charts/

I'm not positive, though. But, I've decided that it's enough for me to warrant having it shipped in and getting evaluated by "Jewelry Judge Ben", who has all the necessary equipment to help me evaluate the diamond. In addition, while different in size, I should be able to compare it to my current "Super Ideal", which was evaluated/chosen among several by Martin Sheffield, Judge Ben and my jeweler, who had ACA RB diamonds on hand at the time (Whiteflash was in the same building then) for me to compare to (my diamond was just as brilliant, if not more).

Thank you for your input. You pose some very good, thought provoking questions!! I had to dig for my G.I.A. Certificate to get the answer, but my current diamond has 4 chevrons (4+1), while this one has 3. I did get a video from the dealer, but it's a file attachment that I'm not able to upload. I never really gave any thought to that, but I will now when I do the comparison between this diamond and mine.

As far as upgrading, I'm not sure. I went from 1.8 CT. VVS1 I to 2.0X CT. VVS1 H to almost 3 Ct. VVS1 G--all in RB previously and then decided I wanted an icy white Princess cut (I tend to stare at my diamonds from the side and found that hints of color bothered me) after looking at both RB and Princess cuts at Cartier and falling in love with the Princess cut in their 1895 Solitaire setting (after having "high profile" settings, with side diamonds/baguettes, I loved the simple elegance of their 1895 Solitaire and the low basket). I decided to go smaller in CT. weight in order to get the low profile and proportions that I wanted in the setting. Plus, I wanted to be less "flashy" and more practical for my professional image.

We probably looked at 7-10 rings the local Cartier store brought in from their NY store over the course of a few months, but I wasn't crazy about the diamonds themselves (too rectangular, not enough brilliance/fire, or not a high enough color). That's when I found PriceScope.

I can never say "never," since I didn't think I would want to upgrade my current PC diamond and here I am. But, my finger size has gotten smaller (it was a 4.25-4.5 when I wore my 2-3 CT. RB; was a size 4, resized down to 3.5-3.75 with my current ring, which is now quite loose on me (I'm between a 3.25-3.5 now). TBH, I'm actually a bit concerned about how high the setting will be on my finger and whether the weight of the diamond will cause it to constantly spin--which is what drove me nuts with my prior E-rings. If anything, I might decide to downsize down the road or make a lateral switch (size-wise) to RB. Seeing Flower12's 3.11 CT. RB next to the diamond band that looks a lot like one that I'm designing on her equally narrow finger has me thinking.

I just need to not get any ideas and stay away from PS for several years again after I get my diamond. :)

It sounds like you are in a good place and know what you are looking for, so I hope it meets your requirements! :)

I have no advice, but would love to see your current stone!
Funny thing is, it just occurred to me that I never got good "hand shots" taken back in 2008. Not for lack of trying. I literally got my E-ring setting finished before we whisked off to our destination wedding and forgot to ask our wedding photographer to take shots of just my hands. I later made several attempts, but gave up since they all came out blurry.

Thanks for the reminder. Let me see what I can do from my iPhone. ;-)

BTW your ring is GORGEOUS!!!!:love::love::love::love::love::love::love:

Thanks! Me too...finding a great Princess cut diamond (especially after attending "Pricescope University"--in addition to superstitions, I mean cultural norms, I was brought up with) is worse than searching for a needle in a haystack!:lol::lol:

It can be so hard to get a clear picture! Looking forward to seeing it! ❤️
Aww, thank you!

Another, clearer picture:

Ugh. Seeing these pics. really makes me wish I would have had the professional take my hand shots 11 yrs. ago when my hand was better manicured and wasn't so wrinkly.

jbake, did you have a photographer take the close-up of your E-ring, or did you take it yourself?

So, now that I'm getting ready to upgrade my ring, I'm on a "mission" to take some pictures of it. I tend to do that a lot (I never take pics. of my cars when they're brand new (and shiny), until I'm at the dealer years later trading them in, lol)!

I love your ring! So white and sparkly! It looks great on your hand, too. ❤️

I actually just took it a couple days ago with my iPhone. Balanced on a peony with my elbow braced on a little box to keep it stable

Thanks, Love!! What I love most about my ring is how icy white it is! It’s an E color according to G.I.A., but the two master gemologists working with me said it leaned more towards a D.

This makes me fearful that I might be disappointed in the 3.17 CT. E color, since larger stones tend to show more hints of color.

Your avatar photo seriously looks like it was professionally taken!! Great job!:love:

So bright, icy white! I can understand why you’d hate to lose that color. Hopefully the next E looks perfect for you ❤️

I wonder what the profile looks like!;)2

I wonder what the profile looks like!;)2

Which profile? Of my current stone (pictured above) or the one I’m considering (3.17 CT.)?

.
Is this (7.4 mm) larger enough than your current stone? It caught my eye for brighteness from many others listed at Blue Nile:

Nothing D or E over three carats made a stronger impression (not that this means much.)
