Hello,
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I recently purchased a 1.44 carat diamond from a local reputable diamond dealer. I was under the assumption and I swear I could remember the jeweler saying it was GIA certified. I did some research and found that the price I was going to pay was close to what I found online. However, when I got home I opened the envelope they gave me and found it was EGL certified. I did some research and found those diamonds are not graded the same as GIA. Does anyone feel I got ripped off by the jeweler? The sheet says F color and SI2 clarity. Any help would be appreciated.

If they said during the sales process it would be GIA graded, but was EGL then you were mislead. Experts say that on "average" GIA would grade 3 grades lower than EGL. Sure hope you can return it.

They misrepresented the specs on the stone. You should return it and allow the experts here on this forum help you to find a nice GIA stone within your budget.

You could let the seller know your concerns, and let them know you would like to have them get it GIA certified to confirm the specifications. Are you within their return timeframe? If so, then it is a no brainer you can return it if you want. If not, and they are unwilling to have it GIA certified, you have to choose if you are content with the stone and current certification or whether you need to escalate the issue.

I think most sellers here would appreciate the opportunity to make things right, and maybe there was a misunderstanding.

Now if they are going around misleading people about GIA certification, that is a bigger issue, but not something I think we can conclude here.

IMG_2486.JPG The biggest problem is I already gave her the ring and she loves it. She is crazy about it. I want to return it and just tell her she will have another stone ina couple days but how would I ever tell her that. Thanks for all your help.

Did you give it as an engagement ring? If you were planning to get a GIA certified stone of similar specifications online you could always let her know that you found a better stone for the ring but had to get it online and it would take longer to get, but you would like to send the ring in to have the stone upgraded. See if she is okay with it, or just wants to stick with the current stone.

If she truly is happy about it, you can just let her be happy and not say anything. You may have over-payed a bit compared to what you could get online and may have been hustled a little, but at least she is happy.

Return it now!. Your jeweler is a crook:!:.

Buddy, you shot yourself in the foot. You already gave her the ring. I assume she loves it.
Next shooter........

If it were me I wouldn't mind my man telling me he was misled when buying the stone and would like to return it to get me something better. I'd actually be glad that he did it. So, I'll say tell her and try to return the stone, then find something that is GIA certified. Good luck!

First up, congrats on your engagement OP! All the best for the future!

Secondly, your jeweller is definitely NOT reputable if they sold you a stone saying it was GIA graded when it actually was graded by EGL (and I'm presuming it was EGL USA).

Thirdly, your now fiancée appears to like the stone very much which indicates (to me at least) that she is not that fussed about the quality of the stone compared to what it means coming from you. Hence, I wouldn't try to take it back.

I think you have learnt a (moderately) expensive lesson this time around. For her next piece of diamond jewellery, might be best to check in with us before your purchase.

Also a reason why I like buying a diamond from a jeweler with an upgrade policy when getting a "deal". Can always fork over a bit more for a better diamond in the future.
