I think they distorted my w-band!! =( Does sizing your ring DOWN distort your ring? (both rings went down by 0.50 in size)
My e-ring & w-band are supposed to be identical in nature…2 less diamonds on my e-band in order for my center stone to sit there)
07/2009 – we wanted my e-ring & w-band to match so we bought both custom-made rings from Tony at Union Diamond and my FI received them in the mail from him. When they arrived in the mail, my FI said they looked fine (he’s a guy!). My fiancé stored them away at our home (nobody else touches them) – I didn’t see the final product in my hand with my own eyes until Jan 2010 because I still wanted an element of surprise on the day he proposed.
01/2010 – proposal happens and I actually see the rings. Because it took a year to find the perfect diamond and e-ring, I was really focused on my e-ring to make sure it was exactly what I wanted, which looks BEAUTIFUL and perfect. The w-band SITTING inside the box looks beautiful. I don’t know if it was distorted then (meaning, if it was sent to us distorted in 07/2009) because when viewing the ring from the top as it sits inside the box, it looks fine; also, I always held it up with my index finger at 12:00 and thumb at 6:00 (my 2 fingers formed a “C” if you will), essentially covering the egg-shaped top with my index finger
The rings were too loose on me and concerned I may lose them, I went to a local jewelry store to have it SIZED DOWN (I am afraid of mailing such expensive jewelry). I had a terrible experience at this local jewelry shop – in the 45 minutes they had it, they essentially messed up all the engraving on my e-ring & w-band). I spoke to Tony from Union Diamond and he was really nice in calming me down (I was a nervous wreck); he said to go ahead and mail both rings back to him in GA and he’ll resize both rings and re-engrave both rings. While the ring was in the possession of UD, Tony was nice in updating me on my rings; he said there were no damages from the local jeweler or the US Mail System in transit and it looks like just the engravings were gone.
02/2010– 3 weeks later, I received them and only inspected my engravings to see if they were re-instated (yes although he forgot to put the PT stamp back on the w-band but that is a minor issue) and to make sure my rings fit me! I didn’t even inspect the ring as a whole (i.e. round or not – who knew that’d be an issue). That was that with the rings and I stored w-band away inside the UD box until our wedding day (no other human or pet else lives with us to touch it).
July 2010 – the next step in the wedding planning process was buying his w-band. We wanted something simple and shiny. Unfortunately, UD was out of our budget and Whiteflash had what we wanted for the price we wanted to spend. We ordered it off the Whiteflash website. When I received his ring, I marveled at our perfectly round his ring was and decided to pick my w-band up to compare. This time, I held my w-band up at 6:00 with both my index finger & thumb (a view I have never seen before) and thought my ring looked egg-shaped. From a SIDE profile, it looks pointier at 12:00. As soon as I noticed this weird distortion from a side view, I quickly put it back in the box to get a TOP view – you can’t really notice the pointy part unless someone tells you about it (it’s very subtle).
I thought it was my eyes playing tricks on me so I noted that the distorted side was the side that had our initials engraved. I closed my eyes and flipped my ring around for a few minutes, opened my eyes to examine my w-band and automatically noticed the distorted side – I check the engraving sure enough it has our initials on that same side. I did this a couple times and each time it was the same.
I also put my w-band inside his – it fits snuggly inside (I have small fingers) and gently touches his on all sides except the side that has the distortion, which shows a huge gap.
When I wear both my w-band & e-ring and run my fingers along the bands together, there is one part on the w-band that feels depressed (it is very subtle) and when I look at the inside of the w-band, it is the side that has our initials on it (the same distorted side). It doesn’t sit as flush.

While I’d like to think that because a lot of money was spent to custom-make a ring, they ought to be perfectly round but I can unwillingly accept that it is not perfectly ROUND – however, my ring isn’t even round, it’s oval!!!
When I took my w-band to a different local jewelry store to ask them to put the PT stamp w-band (they forgot in Feb 2010), when the jeweler first saw it, she described my w-band as being in an egg-shape. I explained to her my situation and she said didn’t want to touch it – she said it’s best to get this straightened out with UD and THEN bring the w-band back to her to put the PT stamp on.
I really wanted some nice professional photos on our wedding day w/ all 3 rings on the table and as you can tell by my photos thus far, my w-band sticks out like a sore thumb.
So my questions to you:
0 – do you notice the distortion too or is it just me? In this rare instance, I sincerely hope I am wrong and it’s just me. =(
1 – Is my w-band distorted because of it being resized down (but it's only by 0.50)??
2 – Since both w-band & e-rings were resized down by the same amount (0.50), how can my e-ring be so perfectly round & my w-band not when they were made identical in nature?
3 – is this an easy fix or am I stuck with it? Looking at PICTURE 1, can they add in a little bit more platinum between 12-3:00? The width of the metal between 12 & 3:00 does look smaller than between 9:00 & 12:00. I know this won’t fix the issue of the rings not sitting very flush (but it’s a subtle notice, as I mentioned before). CAN ANY JEWELERS OUT THERE SUGGEST A QUICK-INEXPENSIVE FIX??

I don’t think it has anything to do with the jeweler I went to in Jan 2010 to have it resized because when UD received it, to my relief, he assured me it was just the engraving that was messed up. The only thing I can think of causing this was the resizing in Feb 2010 because the width of the platinum metal isn't even all around. I never never worn the w-band anywhere - it's been sitting inside the UD ring box.
Since the imperfection is in my wedding band, that’s a bad sign and I don’t want it to carry out as an imperfection in my upcoming marriage.
In summary, from a side view, I just really hate how my w-band looks egg-shaped when it’s supposed e-ring sister is perfectly round. Can any jewelers out there suggest a quick and inexpensive fix?? Please?

PS – Please note that UD made a beautiful engagement ring for me (I get so many compliments on it) – it’s perfect and exactly the way I wanted it so props to them for that. However, with regards to the w-band, egg-shaped w-band is not acceptable.
