Help! Did I ruin my ring.

We recently upgraded the baguettes on my ring, and in doing so the jeweler re-set the center stone, tapering the claws, but I now feel as though the tapered setting makes my center stone look smaller.

What are your thoughts on claws? Do you like tapered or untapered?

I look forward to your feedback.

I really can't see much difference. What do you mean by "tapered claws"? Are you talking about the prongs?

We usually say here that a thinner shank makes the diamond look bigger, so it may be by increasing the size of the baguettes, it makes the center stone look a little smaller.

I think your EC now looks much larger, in comparison with the initial setting. I see where the tapering is - on the baguettes - and instead of 'flaring' out to the corners of the centre stone, they are sleeker/thinner now.

I like your redesign! Live with the change first, before panicking about not liking something or questioning your decision. Change is change - not matter if its good or bad - it always takes a bit to adapt to it!!

I think you'd have to take another picture at the same angle as the old one to really compare. I doubt the prongs are making a difference - the larger baguettes would perhaps make some difference but I doubt they are so much bigger that they would have a negative impact on the center stone.

I'm not seeing a huge difference either. Have you considered having your prongs thinned out a bit, giving them a more claw like appearance? I think that could open up your center stone and make it appear larger and more sleek.

edit: I guess I misunderstood your post. I'm still not seeing a significant change in the appearance of your prongs. As I said above tapering them and making them more 'claw like' usually makes the stone appear larger, so I would have to agree with MGR that it's the larger sides that are making you feel that the center stone is smaller in appearance.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much for your responses. Here are two more pictures, the original pictures were taken some time ago so matching the angle is tricky, apologies for the blurry first pic.

I feel as though having the tapered claws, reduces the bulk of the head (is that the technical term ;) and therefore makes the center stone look smaller.

ps: you have a good point... the larger baguettes might be making my center stone look smaller in which case, I'm regretting getting them pumped up. Sigh!

Ditto! It looks more chunky before hand, and less of the diamond shows! It looks prettier now

Your ring is beautiful!

I do like the new head for the diamond much better than the first one. The base is now smaller so the prongs go out to reach the stone. This is really a better design. I do think the change in the baguettes may be more what you are seeing, but it still looks very beautiful!

Thanks DS - I see the difference now! (DUH!)

I agree - this design is much less boxy and far, far more elegant than the old setting!

Thank you all for your feedback, you are making me feel so much better. I was worried I had made a terrible mistake and ruined my lovely ring.

I must have just been very accustomed to the boxy setting and am not used to the more streamlined one, that and I do think the boxy setting makes the center stone look bigger which is always a bonus, but if you diamond aficionados prefer the new setting, then I trust your opinions and will keep it as is.

Thanks for taking the time to weigh in.

Two more pics with the wedding band.

The old setting had more metal at the top of the baguettes which I think also made the center stone look wider.

I get that the goal is to have the least amount of metal showing, but the metal makes the ring look bigger - in my opinion.

Gorgeous set! I really do like the new one better!

Beautiful set- looks wonderful on your lovely long fingers!

Thanks for the kind words... especially for thinking I have long fingers, I actually have short fingers, but that is a magic trick camera angle ;)

Your new setting is much much much nicer than your old!

Hi Enerchi - the top picture is of the old setting, the bottom pic is the new setting. The new baguettes don't taper as much as the old ones which is a bit of shame, but a good taper is hard to find. Anyway, I was wondering if you may have gotten the two pics mixed up when you mentioned the nicely tapered baguettes in the new design.

honestly, I can't see difference.

No contest. Way sleeker, sexier, and elegant now.

Thanks for posting more pics. I agree with the others, I like the new setting much better, the head is much more sleek and the overall design is more fluid. I think that you made a great design decision! :))

hmmmm... i wonder if i was flipping the two around??? Well, I don't think you made a mistake with your alterations and I do love how it looks now ... AND your fingers DO LOOK SLIM!!!

Beautiful set and I think the new setting shows off your beautiful diamond better.

Thank you so much for your valued feedback. I'm really glad you all like the new design.

Now, to highjack my own thread, I'm thinking that the top of the claws are too bulbous. Do you think I should get them decreased a bit? Or am I now getting way too particular? Feel free to tell me I'm nuts :)

Can you have your jeweller thin them out? Maybe claw prongs? If something is bothering you now, when it's all brand new and perfect...that will only gnaw at you over time. They may be a tad "rounder" than I'd like if it were my beautiful ring. I'm a HUGE claw prong fan :))

I agree, they are a bit too round for my liking. I love claw prongs, are they raelly hard to do? Are they wire or platinum?

I know nothing about jewellry making ("wearing", however, I'm good at!! :wink2: ) but I'm wondering if your bench could just file them somewhat and trim them into more of a claw shape. I don't think you have to have new ones made... but back to point 1 - I know nothing about jewelry making! Who made/reset the ring? Are you in a major city - you could shop around and ask for experienced benches in your area, who do this kind of work... or call one of the PS vendors who are amazing at claw work, to see if they could just fine tune them.

Fellow Ontarian!!! Howdy! :appl:

Ha, what are the odds?! Where in Ont?

I think the new design looks much better, the first version is too boxy looking. I'm sure you just need some time to get used to the change. And I would see if they can slim down the prongs a bit. I'm like Enerchi in that I LOVE claw prongs :naughty: Yours don't look bad though, just a tad on the bulky side.
