Hi guys,

First time posting here. Just wanna get an input for deciding between two diamonds. I'm stuck between deciding an I coloured diamond and a J coloured diamond. Both are GIA certified and looks well. I need an expert opinion.

The first one has the following spcecifications:

1.5 carat
SI1
Very Good Cut Grade
Very Good Polish
Excellent Symmetry
56% Table
Medium Blue Fluorescence
The diamond is eye clean specially at the centre.

1.5 Carat
VS1
Excellent Cut Grade
Excellent Polish
Very Good Symmetry
54% Table
Faint Fluorescence
The diamond as it states on HCA has a better score.

Now my question is, is it better to sacrifice color and go to J or stick with the I in exchange for a better cut.

What do you guys suggest is preferable?

#1 is a no. Eliminated.

Stick with the better cut, absolutely.

Sorry I forgot to state, the first diamond is an I color and the second is a J.

My problem is would the J color be too yellow in this case? It's just at the border of near colorless and almost at faint.

It is a personal preference. Some people like J because they like the warm white and the great value. For some, it is a mind issue: they can see tint and they don't like it.

Has your intended mentioned any of this... would she rather a warmer diamond to get a better quality bigger stone?

My lady haven't not said anything in the past about colors but a couple of her girlfriends got engaged and I know she will be comparing ring size and colours with them. The ring will be place on top a white gold setting. Around the ring and the prongs will be small diamonds. What I am worried about is how it will look if I get a J color with it.

I've seen both colors in person but don't have the level of expertise that the rest of this forum has. I did check the HCA score and J seems to fair better with a 0.8 score.

Take #2 based solely off the reports. But if I were the OP, I'd do a little bit more shopping around to see if I could find a better stone for the budget.

I agree with the others, eliminate the first one. Second one is better cut, but ya know, there are thousands of diamonds out there. You could get a well cut I color diamond if there is concern about J.

Yeah these are the two that I've narrowed down based on my budget. Been looking around for a while now and I'm pretty happy with either of the choice.

Does anyone have a J coloured diamond on a pave band with white gold? I'd like to see some just for reference.

You really can't tell much about color from pictures. You have to see it in natural light and the various environments the ring would most be worn in. A J just won't be quite as bright as a higher color stone. Great cut helps, though.
