Okay, so my boyfriend and I went ring shopping this week. I had my heart set on a round solitaire and then this jeweler convinced me to try on this cushion brilliant cut. It's measurements are:

6.97x 6.78 x 5.17 MM
weight 1.99 ct
Color: Nearly colorless H
Clarity: I1
Polish/symmetry: very good
treatment: None

Now, this ring would cost $8,999.00 and I convinced him to throw in a paved 1/2 carat band with that. I was just seeing if this was a bad price? I know the clarity is graded bad, but I didn't see anythign with my naked eye. I did see it under the microscope though. There was 1 tiny carbon spot and 1 bubble. I personally didn't see it though and I am not sure if it's because jewelry stores are always dark. I just would like any information/advice anyone could give since this is a big purchase for us. Thank you in advance. I truly appreciate it!

What lab graded the stone? Unless it was GIA or AGS, you could be paying more for less. EGL stones for example are commonly graded higher in color and clarity than highly respected GIA/AGS. Not apples to apples. An EGL H color could be a GIA J or K; same with clarity. Heavily included stones are often not the best choices for engagement rings, as sometimes there are durability issues as well as eye-cleanliness concerns.

Did you take any pictures? Can you post the report? What kind of cushion was it (modern, crushed ice, antique, ...)?

Please don't buy the first stone you see because it is sparkly in jewelers lights. Make sure you look at it in multiple lighting environments (by the window, etc).

For example, here is one that is well cut, smaller carat weight but faces up at a comparable millimeter size - makes me wonder if yours is a deep stone - http://www.goodoldgold.com/ecommerce/1.50ct-i-vs2-signature-modern-cushion-diamond.html

I did! It is also graded GSI.

I found it very hard to take pictures of the diamond though to be honest so I am sorry if you cannot tell very well. Also, I moved it! Sorry my first time on this site!

GSI is not a respected or reliable grading lab (in fact, I can't think that I have ever even seen that one). If anything, you could be really overpaying for the diamond because it is actually lower in quality than they are saying. I would NOT buy from any jeweler who does not sell GIA or AGS graded stones. Please forget this and start over. I would usually not recommend I1 for an engagement ring, but definitely not when it isn't even graded by a reliable lab. You can get a better stone. The diamond posted from Good Old Gold is a great example of a well cut, reliably graded cushion diamond.
