Hi Everyone,

I am ready to make my first real diamond purchase. I have been reading a lot lately, but there is so much I still don't know and hope you can help.

Here are a few I have found. Which would you choose or do you have a better suggestion? I'm hoping to keep the diamond under 4k.

Is there anything I should be concerned about if I purchase any of these?

Are you the intended wearer or giver? If the giver, have you and the wearer actually seen GIA graded diamonds in H, I, J color? Some people are very color observant and some not (i.e., biological difference in color acuity). What does the wearer do professionally? Hobbies? Are they someone who obsesses to get just the right color shoe/bag/nail polish? Do they use words like 'ecru, oyster, candelight' or refer to such colors as "white"?

Giver, but she is looking at the diamonds with me. We haven't seen different color types specifically, other than what was in the Fred Meyer and Costco cases. She said she is not very color observant and isn't a very picky person, white colors are very similar, she would just say White. We are very active for hobbies: hiking, dirt bikes, scuba diving and such. How do hobbies effect the diamond?

Hobbies don't affect the diamond per se (but absolutely should be considered with the setting). Often, we can use hobbies to guess as color sensitivity. Think a painter, photographer or quilters...all hobbies that involve a lot of color acuity. If she's not really picky, then here are my thoughts. With her hobbies, she should plan on not wearing the ring during many of those (never in salt water!) and look for a low profile setting with a bezel.

Of the four you posted, I like these two best in the order I post them. The first is bigger (in mm) and I like the smaller table. But, both are great.

Additional options
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...rat-f-color-si1-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-3824044 {raises the color a lot, great angles and great light return, 5.77 mm)
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...rat-h-color-si1-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-3824029 {if the JA gemologist cleared the cloud inclusion for impact on light return, this looks great, 5.72 mm}

I would also show her these (click on the videos). These are antique diamonds. Compare to the moderns above by size in mm, not weight. As a fellow SCUBA diver, old cuts have a light return more like you see under water. Large, broad flashes.

This is a nice bezel from WF, I would just ask that the edges of the bezel are softened to be less vertical, so it finishes more like the JA version (https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...-bezel-set-diamond-engagement-ring-item-53652).

But, have her look at both Sholdt and Maevona on Instagram. Sholdt tend to be clean and contemporary and Maevone more nature-oriented and feminine. JA won't order from these vendors, but I think you can order directly and have the setting sent to JA for setting. WF may be able to order directly.

I really like the 0.74 F SI1 posted by @rockysalamander above. Great price on an eye-clean SI1!

As for the settings, I would also recommend the JA bezel if you decide to purchase the stone through them. Looks very similar to the bezel from WF, but has a bit softer lines. The WF bezels are a bit more squarish, which is more of a contemporary look, whereas the JA bezel is more classically round. Just depends on her tastes.
