Hi! Have been reading a lot of posts on this forum last couple weeks, and am impressed with the depth of knowledge here - would like to appeal for suggestions from this expert forum! I'm looking for a nice stone to give as a Christmas gift to my wife, would probably set into a pendant later, but perhaps not immediately in interest of time (and to let her have more input into style, as well).

Have been browsing extensively and like the idea of a larger-table stone to make it appear bigger to the eye, which has driven me more to oval, marquise, pear cuts -- trying to maximize size for budget, more than carat weight (does that also drive bad proportions / less sparkle?)

- Budget in the $5-8k range,
- color H-J,
- want eye clean VS2 or better.

Here are some I've been looking at (but more than open to any suggestions!):

http://search.virtcert.com/cgi/u/1012/v.cgi?stock=15508019&_s=1012&_p=sdf348gd743&_c=&_fs=1&prestock=&_ln=ps (Very interesting, but no response from vendor)

Have seen a LOT of interesting ones at USACertedDiamonds using the PriceScope search tool, and even sent a few inquires but gotten no responses (more than a week), so am not sure about them, but some tempting options:

http://search.virtcert.com/cgi/u/1012/v.cgi?stock=15509975&_s=1012&_p=sdf348gd743&_c=&_fs=1&prestock=&_ln=ps

http://search.virtcert.com/cgi/u/1012/v.cgi?stock=14870197&_s=1012&_p=sdf348gd743&_c=&_fs=1&prestock= (a bit on higher end of budget, but interesting)

http://search.virtcert.com/cgi/u/1012/v.cgi?stock=15507050&_s=1012&_p=sdf348gd743&_c=&_fs=1&prestock=&_ln=ps (it is SI2, but crazy-big for the budget)

Thank you!!

I also wouldn't loook at stones from EGL as they have very loose grading. I wouldn't get a huge stone either mayvve stick to around 1 carat and then maybe a simple bezel or a pave halo. I wore a 1.8 pendant and I found I didn't wear it alot so I know have the one I will post that I wear alot. It is an antique and sort of dressy but the size is good for every day.
Sorry I thought you said Pear just reread Marquis ...No Marquis not great for pendant...I'd rather see oval. I have a 25 stone 5.5 carat marquis eternity band and I would never wear it as a solitaire pendant.

I would die for a yellow pear shape diamond pendant maybe with halo.......I havve a white diamond pear necklace which I love.

I think a marquis set east to west can be stunning.

Only thing is, since the tips can show color, I would not go down to a J. Probably keep it at an H unless you know your wife won't mind.

Also, you need to find a vendor who can see and recommend the stones. When I was looking for a pear for my mom, I worked with James Allen. They got me all the info, including an ASET and were able to give me their opinion. I winded up getting a beautiful pear.

Ditto...
You definitely need to be working with a vendor where you can see pictures of the stones. JA is a very good vendor because
you can see pictures as well a video of the stones. You can also request up to 3 asets to check on the light return.

Thank you all for the fast responses! Checking them all out...

IMHO, I think a pear is a prettier cut for a pendant than an oval or marquise. BTW, Oval is my favorite cut and is my ER.

That's gorgeous!

Oval/marq/pears are very leaky, and will show a faint color in J.

Have you considered rounds? They will face up whiter due to the cut, and if you want to maximize size you could go to K.
Here are two suggestions. Notice that the J round is more yellow than the I marq from the side, but from the top the J is whiter:
