hi everyone! I’m really hoping you can help me out with a setting for my 1.195 carat princess diamond from WF. I know princess cuts aren’t the most popular but still hoping you can help.

Initially I wanted to go with a petite pave setting from JA, it’s 1.8mm wide.

They sent me pics of how they would set a princess cut and I like it. However after more research I decided I should go with 2mm and ideally I’d like to have WF set it. If i can find a setting I can just send to them, they’ll set it for me. (JA princess setting below)

I love the pave shank of the Vatche charis. It’s 2mm. I just don’t know about the head. They don’t have straight on profile photos so I can see what it’ll look like. So while I’m leaning toward this one what if I hate it??? Vatche makes it just for my diamond dimensions right? So what I’m worried about is this - I really love the sharp straight edges of a square stone, I don’t want a head that is bulbous or too rounded.. I like when it comes to more of a V. It can be a little curved but not much. The James Allen one I like- it’s right in between, not too straight but not really rounded at the bottom of the stone. Vatche charis -

I am going back and forth daily- I worry I won’t like the vatche then I look at it and think YES I DO! I want it! I just want to be sure.

I like the WF legato but to me it’s much too rounded/bulbous for a princess stone. Ultimately the shank of the vatche I LOVE. I don’t love the harmony or the legato shank.

What to do? I’d love if anyone ever had or saw a princess set in the vatche charis head. Then there’s the vatche Algeria which is supposedly that same heart shaped head but again.. much more rounded (it does have cathedral shank tho so maybe that plays into it).

I am admittedly very picky. I don’t want a basic bulky stock v prong. I’d like to be able to see something and say “that’s what I want.” Also I want to stay at 1.9-2mm shank.

I’m assuming JA is out? It’s too thin, both for stability and looks (2mm will be a little more substantial). I’ve read about that. I like the bigger sparkle in a 2mm but it’s still petite which I want.

This will hopefully be my last upgrade, the vatche is at the top of my price range (1500 for 18k). I’d go for platinum if I was more SURE about my decision. Like 100%.
Then I want a new wedding band too and I like the vatche one but for now I am wanting something mismatched with baguettes.

I could just go to a local jeweler and pay $1100 for a basic 2mm shank with basic stick v prong. Bad idea right??

I also like the Leon Mege lotus and if I had the budget I’d just buy that :D
 
Have you considered contacting HPD (high performance diamonds)? I know they do a lot of work with Vatche and have customized some of their settings for customers, complete with CADs for approval. That way you could be sure the head prongs look exactly as desired prior to making it.

I’m not sure if they work with outside stones but it might be worth a call.

I like the Vatche Charis...did you see this picture? Still hard to see the sides but it looks pretty straight to me with little v shaped prongs. I would share
exactly what you want with WF so they can pass it on to Vatche. Tell them what you like/dont like in the picture so they can pass that on to Vatche.

That Vatche Charis is so pretty! Maybe ask WF if they have a photo of the ring set with a princess cut so you can see the basket. What about the Vatche Inara pave?

Oops, just saw that the Simon G is out of price range, but I love the basket! And it would make a nice set with the band next to it.

Hi. Yes I’ve seen that one/ it’s my favorite. It looks straight to me as well, but I’m unsure if it’s the angle. If what I’m seeing is how it’ll be, I’ll be happy! I have mentioned all of this to WF. They can let vatche know? I thought they make it as they do, wasn’t sure if i could give my input lol. That’s good to know!

Hi thank you for your response! The vatche can be done with princess but apparently it’s not the regular (initially meant for round) so they don’t have anything in their files - I’ve asked. :/
Thank you for your input! I’m not entirely against cathedral but don’t prefer it.

I ended with a setting from Simon G not listed on WF website that I found, and they were able to order it for me. Do not know if it is your style but it is mine.. and my GF I hope ;-) I will have the e ring on hand in a couple of weeks. I will post pictures then on my thread if your are interested.

I’m open to the BGD setting. I could purchase that and WF would be able to set my stone? I don’t know how that works. I like BGD v prongs so would it come all ready for my stone?

The main difference I’m noticing now is that the BGD head comes to a point on the shank whereas the Vatche one doesn’t.. hmmm

Does the pave look the same with both? The pics look different but I’m thinking it’s the same. I tend to like the vatche shank a little better in pics.
 
Just a note on the design, I generally prefer a cathedral (even quite a small one) to aid in making head far less likely to deform and be sheared off under pressure. So, I'd suggest something like this one to give the head some lateral support.

Aesthetically, I also like the detail in the gallery.

Here's the BGD fishtail pave, but I'd still recommend the cathedral shank as above.

To be honest the only things I’m sure about are that i don’t want cathedral and I love the pave shank of the Vatche Charis (pic below). Would this be considered fishtail pave like the BGD one?
So I’m wondering if I should get the BGD one or just go with the Vatche. The Bgd is more expensive but it is 3/4 eternity instead of half.. which I don’t need .. The head is beautiful tho!

I like the Charis better than the BGD one, but its really got to make you happy. The prongs are difficult to know if they are curving outward due to the stone size or due to the style of the head. Like PP said, whatever you go with, you'll have to be clear about that.

What about Ritani's Endless love? Its bead set, not open pave...

I think I like the vatche better too. The only thing I notice now that I did not even notice before (lol) is how the BGD head comes to a point where it meets the shank and the vatche doesn’t. I think I need to stop obsessing. I think I’ll love it. Now I gotta wait 4 weeks for it to be made

Regarding the bead set I actually have a bead set wedding band that DK made, and I like it - but I really think I’m gonna LOVE the open pave.
