Hi all, I''m new here. I''ve been surfing jewelery sites for a few weeks now, and even though I''ve seen everything I''m sure I have barely scratched the surface. Reading recent threads here, I saw people making some great suggestions so I thought maybe ill find some help too.

Our budget is only $3500 for the whole ring.

The problem is that I don''t like small, plain solitaire settings (Tiffany alike). I like more fancy and eye catching setting. I do like those all halos, bezels - which make diamond looks bigger, and pave, melee etc. to make it more blingy. On the other side, I like solitaire but looking more unusual than those all I see around.

I know this all I wanna have might be too much for my fiance''s pocket, and I don''t wanna be a b*tch asking for spending more but I know i wouldn''t feel really happy with simple little ring because it''s just not me

I like cushion look, I do like also round but in my opinion, it depends on setting which will be better. Palladium would be the best for me but white gold is OK too.

Any suggestions? Do you know any nice setting for me in affordable price?

Well, I know a number of ladies around here have bought some pretty, ornate settings from Lord of Gem Rings on eBay. OxfordDiamondCo is a seller I''ve bought from myself for a temp setting. The Oxford setting had a lovely style, and was decently made with no porosity, but the melee was very so-so, not very sparkly at all. But, for a setting with a lot of detail and melee for $250, I felt it was more that worth the price.

So although the quality is, well, you get what you pay for, it is certainly an option if you really want a more ornate setting that you might otherwise be able to afford.

Oh: also Kim Wheeling of JewelryRings.com has some lovely antique repro rings- no melee, but filigree and quite reasonably priced (many under $200). They need to be rhodium plated- he sends them out freshly cast and not plated, so they''re that off-white that unplated white gold is. He can also alter settings to fit different sizes and shapes if asked. While they''re just cast repros, they are pretty for the price.

Also stick with white gold. That''ll save some too, and it is perfectly reasonable as a setting.

Good luck!

Have to checked out Fay Cullen??? There are some beautiful rings that are definitely not simple solitaires!!!

Just be careful with FC, their return policy and CS is awful! But they do have gorgeous things.

And Orchids, you can certainly get a beautiful stone and setting for that price. You could get a very nice .50 carat stone for around $1,000 and still have a substantial amount for the setting, or you could get a beautiful .75 carat stone and still have $500-1000 for the stone (depending on the diamond specs you want).

Do you have pictures of what you love? And how much size are you willing to trade for an elaborate setting? That will help us find some settings in your budget.

I am sure you will find what you are looking for - it just takes time.

If you don't mind a "used" ring, you can get more bang for your buck. I have actually grown to really love the antique cut diamonds and know I will get one as a RHR sooner or later.

Can you post some photos of things you like even if they are beyond your budget. It's hard to interpret what someone likes without seeing examples. It sounds like the only thing you don't like is a plain tiffany setting. There are so many settings with side stones and extra bling that you could get and still keep to your budget as long as you are willing to keep the center stone at .5 to .75 ct.

So post some links of things you like.

Hi orchids, welcome to PS! Here is a link to one of my favorite jewlers site.
Knox
They have a lot of different styles, beautiful pieces, and pretty reasonable prices. Happy browsing!

Thank you so much for your response. I''m sending some pics what i like but I''m afraid it wont be really helpful cause styles are very different.

Those rings are very different, but I assure you you can find most of those styles within your budget easily. What is your lifestyle like? And are you willing to baby your ring? Those two questions might give you some more insight into whether you should get a pave adorned confection or a more modern streamlined setting...

thank you neatfreak. I know they are, and I''m confused which one look the best for my eye now. I am massage therapist but i guess I''m not gonna wear my ring during work. I''m afraid a little of melee cause I don''t wanna loose any of those little rocks but it doesn''t matter if it''s practical if it will be pretty:).

No problem. The thing is that we all here work best with a little guidance. So I would go try on some things at a local jeweler and get a feel for what really moves you on YOUR hand. Then once you have an idea of what you''d like, and what proportion of the budget you are willing to spend on a setting, and we can get to work for you.

There is plenty out there, don''t fret!

Thank you eBree, this is really nice one!

Orchids, welcome !
I think a great option is to get one of the lovely bezels from Knox, such as the ones you posted. I know they have many great choices under 1k, and a bezel imo increases the look of your diamond''s size by quite a bit - a very pretty looking illusion!
If it were me, I''d stick with plain metal and no melee - this will both maximise your budget and give you more room to upgrade the setting in the future if you so wish. The halos with the melee will easily take up half or more of your budget at the lower end..

Then use the rest of the budget on a ~0.75ct diamond - if you want a cushion, then Engagement Rings Direct are the way to go. I''ve read many times that Mark there is lovely.
Or, if you decide on a round than Whiteflash or Good Old Gold will be able to do you right.

I would suggest going to good local vendors that feature both rounds and cushions and get an idea of what shape you like more IRL - ask them to see GIA or AGS graded stones in a range of colours and clarity grades. If you can look at lower grades such as J and SI2. This way you can start to get an idea of what colour and clarity you are comfortable with. Be sure to take the stones away from the direct store lights if you can, such as to a window with natural light.
This helps to see how they will perform normally.

In an ideal cut round you can lower colour and clarity to increase size - I have a K Si1 RB which is very white and completely eyeclean. Before I started my education here I never would''ve thought I''d go below an H, VS stone

In a cushion, you don''t have quite as much leway, but that said antique-style cushions also look lovely in slightly "warmer" colours.

Once you have some ideas on the above, post it up and we can help you find diamonds which will be good candidates for you.

hope that helps a bit

thanks arjunajane! it helps a lot. I''ll check my local vendors first like u said.
Ps. I knew I can have eye clean Si1 but I didn''t know that I can have white stone below H! I guess I have to change my parameters:)

You're welcome !
Yes, neither did I - of course, everyone's taste is different but imo its a great way to stretch the 'ol budget. Also, when working with a trusted vendor, you can also potentially source eyeclean Si2's which are a great find.
If you're interested here is my thread with plenty of pics..(better photos further along the thread)
