Hey friends,

I'm going to be proposing soon and I've found THE perfect ring... only it's 2-3x what I can afford:

http://www.heartsonfire.com/Shop-Jewelry/Rings/Engagement-Rings/SurrenderHOFSolitaire.aspx

Name-brand doesn't matter, it just so happens this ring encompasses what I'm looking for:

Round 1 carat, VS2 +, I +, Excellent cut +
Solitaire platinum/white gold ring with filigree/metalwork

The girl this is for has had a tough life financially, and would probably be happy with a plastic cereal box ring. But she has always thrown joking hints about the 1 carat mark, and she loves rings in the style of the one above, especially Edwardian style.

Can I build this same ring myself for less than $7000?

it will be difficult if to find an ideal cut diamond. so the diamond itself will be around $7000 but you can always get a simple setting for now and upgrade the setting in the future.
I'd suggest this diamond
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=BLAGS-104052029003
it's strong blue flur and the ideal cut will make it appear whiter than a normal J color and it's a beautiful stone.
with a simple and classic setting like this
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/home/ring-details/?product_id=5351
if you wire the money the will give you an extra 5% discount on the diamond(correct me if i'm wrong ladies, could be 3%) if you tell them you find them from PS and if you don't live in TX then you don't have to pay tax so the whole set will be $6715

total $7022.25

If it was me I would do a smaller diamond in a halo. My thoughts are why push the budget so you are really tight. You may need that money starting your new married life together. You can always suprise her later for an anniversary.

I think this would be gorgeous

40.6/33.0 is a shallow combination. Paired with 75% lower halves it's likely that obstruction issues occur at normal viewing distances.

These general proportions are an improvement, although the actual measurements could be nearer 40.5/33.7 (no way to know with GIA's rounding).

Good potential but again a slightly shallow combination which may be outside the HOF target-area if that is what's being sought. And in any case more information is needed to know how they measure-up top-to-bottom in terms of cut quality, consistency and precision. ASET images would be helpful in that regard.

When you say the exact ring how exact are you talking? This is a lovely engraved setting. Whitegold is $900.

Yes. It can be done. Because I know it's been done before. There was a poster here last year who wanted a similar setting on a tight budget and I remember that BGD came through with a combination of a Unique Settings of New York and hand engraving. It looked beautiful.

AND you said a carat was important to her. NOT that a ROUND IDEAL one carat was important to her... so why not get a lovely cushion for your budget? Or an oval

Cushions and ovals cost less per carat and you can get a lovely one carat oval or cushion with a comfortable amount left over for a setting.

Here's what I suggest:

Call Brian Gavin Diamonds and ask for Lesley... tell her that you were on PS and GYPSY told you that they had done hand engraving to antique a stock setting from Unique Settings of New York and could you please get a quote for that same setting... and a picture (I tried to find it but I think the post title was very generic). Show them a pic of the setting in this thread as well.

And for the center. You can ask BGD to source you a nice cushion or oval. Or you can work with another vendor:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI1-Premium-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1421036.asp Beautiful. The size will BLOW HER AWAY. HIGH COLOR and if eyeclean a great buy with a spread of 7.72*5.50*3.65 An Oval with potential. Ask if eyeclean and ask for an ASET and post it here.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Premium-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1353564.asp Square cushion with potential. It would look lovely in the setting you want and it is one carat. Ask if eyeclean if so get an ASET if interested.

Totally agree. Especially the settings that everyone has found. Amazing. You give us a project and a budget that needs just a little shoe horning and we can make it work.

Speaking of making it work. I feel I would be remiss if I didn't include this option:

IF it were me shopping for someone that A) loves vintage and antique styles in white metal and B) wants a full carat in a diamond I would probably take a long hard look at this ring for sale:

http://www.rubylane.com/item/571649-100-00389/Platinum-Art-Deco-RIng It's got a beautiful platinum setting and a 1 carat stone that has appraised at I color and VVS clarity. The diamond is an Old European cut, which is the faceting that is accurate to the Edwardian an Deco time periods. They are different from round brilliants and have a flower/snowflake pattern that many people (including myself) just adore. Plus it leaves you with a 6000 you can put toward the wedding/honeymoon.

If you did decide that you like this... let us know and we'll advise next steps.
