Hi

After a very unfortunate :errrr: situation on a plane recently where my wife noticed her stone was missing and one of the prongs was broken, I’m on the lookout for a new stone (and more solid setting).

I’m considering something like this:

Any thoughts on the stone. What about setting, what should I aim for, If I want a solid setting?

Thanks in advance
The unlucky n00b.

That will be a beautiful stone. No problems there.

By solid ring you mean no side diamonds? We usually call these solitaire settings. Mostly what I would aim for is a nicely
integrated head (integrated with the band)...not a peg head. If you go with BGD...thats not an issue either.

Here are a few that I like...

Also wanted to point out this "Blue" which is a drop in color but a jump in size. I have a small BGD blue and love it.

I forgot to add, that I would place the diamond you picked out on hold, because someone else might snatch it up, that has been happening pretty quickly lately. I also wanted to add that you do get a discount on the diamond for being a pricescope member, so make sure if you order it that you mention that so you get the discount. The diamond you picked out looks fantastic, I'm sure she will be tickled pink :twirl:

I think that one looks awesome. You may see a bluish tint in the sunlight, some people really like this look and others do not. It is really a matter of personal preference.

By "solid" I'm guessing you're after a setting the diamond won't fall out of this time. I'm not sure what your wife has been wearing (white gold, gold, platinum) but if it wasn't platinum I'd suggest platinum this time. It's supposed to be the most secure metal for a diamond you can get. Also if you're getting a round brilliant I'd suggest 6 prongs. The rest is up to you I guess you can ask for thicker prongs but it's going to mean that the ring won't be as pretty. The main thing is making sure that you take the ring in to get the prongs checked every 6 months or so.

As long as you don't skimp on quality when it comes to the setting and you get the prongs checked often, really it should be fine no matter what you get.

Hi

Yes by solid i mean it wont fall/break off. The ring is 18ct yellow gold.
I guess we didn't know we had to have the prongs checked.

Wouldnt platinum look silly on a yellow gold ring?

Yellow gold will be very sound in the settings that have been posted you don't need to worry about that. I don't know if you had insurance on the last ring, but I would insure this ring with jewelers mutual, or chubb. And no matter the metal she should take the ring to local jeweler to be inspected every 6 months miniumum, and they will usually clean it to. They will usually do that free of charge :twirl:

I have a whitegold channel set diamond ring, that I am rough on for over 5 years and I have never had a problem.

platinum prongs won't look silly on a yellow gold ring-this is common. You should definitely get the prongs checked regularly no matter what the setting, that is just part of jewelry maintenance.

here is a setting with the prongs in plat and the band in yellow gold so you can see how it looks...

I would check with BGD even when I change the channel set rings to yellow gold the center is white, so I am assuming he must do platinum center prongs, which doesn't look silly.

And no matter what setting you choose, it is still possible to have a prong broken and a stone lost! Perhaps consider insurance, if you did not have it the first time. :))

I'd second the idea of using yellow gold (if that is the colour she prefers) with platinum prongs. It is definitely a done thing - that is how Tiffany does their yellow gold rings. It makes the diamond look whiter too :)

But I wouldn't get too hung up on the setting. Just making sure it's insured, getting the jeweller to check it every 6 months, is all you need.
