Hello all,

I found this wonderful forum a few days ago, and have learned SO much information about diamonds... but still have a few questions...

At first I was set on getting an H&A diamond @ WhiteFlash - but after reading the knowledge section that said that H&A doesn''t necessarily mean better performance - I''ve decided to broaden my search. So I''m trying to figure out.. what parameters should I look at when I want a bright and shiny diamond!

So my question to all you experts out there... what should I look for in a diamond to make sure it as bright and sparkly as it can be...
1) Holloway cut advisor (anything < 2)
2) Symmetry and Polish (excellent or ideal)
3) anything else??

I''ve narrowed down 2 diamonds for you guys as well - one is AGS ideal and the other is GIA excellent. Both were under the "Ideal" section at bluenile... but after looking at the holloway cut advisor and symmetry/polish I''m not quite sure why these weren''t listed as Signature Ideal ... what other aspect of the diamond am I not considering??

1st diamond:
Cut: AGS 0
Color: J
Clarity VS1
Carat: 1.718
Comments: fluorescence negligible, additional clouds not shown.
both Polish and Symmetry = Ideal
depth% 61.6
table % 57.2
crown angle 34.8
pavillion angle 40.9

Holloway cut advisor: 1.9

---------------------------

2nd diamond:
Cut: GIA Ideal
Color: J
Clarity VS2
Carat: 1.73
both Polish and Symmetry = Excellent
depth% 61.3
table % 56
crown angle 34.5
pavillion angle 40.6

Holloway cut advisor: 0.7

So in summary.. What other stuff about the diamonds should I be looking at? and are these two diamonds above basically the same thing?

Numbers on both those choices are nice - IS to confirm.

If you''re looking for a "bright" stone - one with a lot of white light return, you might search for a shallower crown and deeper pavilion combo - 33/41 ish, with IS to confirm no obstruction issues.

yssie: by "bright" do you mean brilliant? as in a BIC?

so the opposite to that would be something fiery? FIC?

yap, numbers look good, now will need IS to confirm.

Yep-that''s what I was getting at

Thanks....I''m still getting used to how a slight change in specs changes the appearance of a stone :)

IS = ideal scope?

If so.. does blue nile provide this? I can''t seem to find it..

oh and to reply about wanting a "bright" stone... I guess I meant that I want the BEST stone I could get...

BN does not provide this service. You could buy your own and check it out - always fun

- or you can have it appraised by someone who can take the photo for you. There''s a list of appraisers under "resources" on the top menu.

Hi Collinator and welcome!

Both diamonds look extremely promising as far as can be told without images, and should offer a good display of fire, brilliance and scintillation, everything that makes up a diamond's light show and beauty. Both should be safe bets ( although no guarantees without images) as they have excellent numbers, and BN do have a good return policy. As Yssie suggested, ordering an Idealscope could be very useful, they are simple to use with a little study.
