The better the hearts and arrow is the better the superior light performance?

I was looking at a GIA 3 "excellent” symmetry rating diamond but their H&A image isn't the best. Will that effect the light performance?

It is that importing that i should pay more for a nearly perfect H&A?

Thanks!

With images to help, these numbers for a round brilliant will likely make a great stone:

Depth 60-62.3

Table 54-58

Pavilion 40.6 to 40.9

Crown 34-35

A diamond can get a "ideal" or "excellent" rating and still have a poor H&A. Having a "true" Hearts and Arrows cut will tend to make the diamond more brilliant, since the facets had to be more precisely aligned to reveal that pattern. The pattern you see is a side effect of the precise alignment and careful cutting to perfectly align the facets. So, having that precision in cutting tends to make it perform better. JamesAllen's TrueHearts are really "near H&A", but you'll notice that they tend to have pretty good IS images on the whole. There is better, but even being "near H&A" helps with performance.

The hearts and arrows are an indication of at least good optical symmetry. However, it is when those are super crisp and precise that you get the larger flashes of white and colored light that great cutting offers. The more precisely the virtual facets (mirrors) are aligned with each other, the bigger the virtual mirrors become. Bigger virtual mirrors, bigger flashes of light. Bigger flashes of light mean greater chances for dispersion. When a diamond is cut so well that there are bigger initial virtual flashes and thus more secondary, tertiary and on down the line flashes that are still visible to the unaided eye, the more that unaided eye enjoys the flashes!

That is the reason that proper cutting is so incredibly important to the eye.

Pete Yantzer, now retired from the American Gem Society Laboratory, gave a talk maybe seven or eight years ago about some of the AGS research. I may be off a little on my numbers, but not far and I do not have time to go find my notes, so no, you may NOT quote me. ;)2

According to Pete Yantzer, as you tilt round brilliant cut diamond back and forth 40 degrees on each side of 0 degrees, there are, in a one carat diamond, approximately 200,000 scintillation events. In a poorly cut diamond, perhaps three to five thousand of them are eye visible. In a super duper fantastically cut diamond, there may be twelve to fifteen thousand scintillation events that are visible to the eye. The rest are all too small to be individually perceived by the human eye. The larger the diamond, the more scintillation events visible, which is one of the reasons larger diamonds are so highly regarded.

That is why cutting matters. You can go from dull and boring to bright and vibrant with an incredible balance of both brilliance and scintillation. You just have to be willing to do the work to cut the diamond properly.

@Wink thank you very much for the input. Can i also get your option on the two diamond below? Will the 2ctw be as brilliant i i don't have an ASET so i cant really really tell if the H&A is good.

@rockysalamander
While I did end up buying the 1.82cts

As a member of the trade I may not talk about the merits of specific diamonds. I am allowed to provide educational material and answer questions not related to specific diamonds as well as correct misstatements of fact.

There are many well educated consumers here who can answer your question about individual diamonds. If you get active here and participate, soon you can be one of the answer givers if you enjoy doing so. Some of us have been here for more than a decade...
