The setting my wife-to-be has settled on has a non-changeable head made for a 6.5 mm round stone. The cost of a stone that size is causing me to sacrifice quality so as to not break the budget. I'd rather have a smaller stone with better cut, color, etc.
The question is how small a diameter stone will fit securely in a 6.5 mm 4prong head? Here's a picture of the setting:

Any suggestions?

Gabriel will have a setting that fits whatever size you choose, or they will make you one.

But maybe your fiancee would rather sacrifice color and clarity to get more size.

If you could find a stone in the .90 range, it will save you some money and allow you to get a better stone. I would warn her, however, that that particular setting might be a pain because I am betting it will catch on things badly.

Here's another point to ponder: All of these scrolly Verragios and settings like your gal picked make me wonder: Is that thing actually comfortable? I have dry and somewhat sensitive skin. I have had the 6-prong Tiffany type heads practically wear a hole in my finger, just from the little tiny edge of that head. I know I'd never be able to wear anything that digs into the top of my finger. I need a ring that is smooth across the top, so that it's comfortable to wear and it not constantly abrading my skin. I know I would not like the way that setting feels on my finger after a few weeks.

That's what I was thinking, that thing is going to snag on EVERYTHING.

Thank you for your thoughts. We saw the ring in a shop and I gave it the "snag test" on a sweater and it seemed OK, but you never know. The fact is that she has looked at dozens of rings and this is far and away "the ONE". It's out of my hands and I just have to fill it with a stone.
A 6.5 mm diameter diamond is too pricey for my budget given that I want quality. A quality diamond in a smaller size works for the budget, but I'm concerned about whether a smaller diameter will be secure in a 6.5 mm head.
Can a 5.9 or 6.0 mm diameter diamond properly fit a 6.5 mm head?

Id contact a Gabriel vendor, GOG is one, and see if they can make it with a smaller center stone. I can't imagine they wouldn't be able to so that your budget was better accommodated.

I agree with Ame, see if they will make the head for a .80 stone if that is what your budget allows. I would not try to put a .80 6mm stone in a 1 ct setting, though. It's not an issue of being secure, it just won't look right. You need to have her look at the settings made for .75 ct stones if you want to be in the .75-80 range (if for any reason they won't make that setting for this size diamond).
