I''m a bit confused about the HCA scores. I know that scores of 0-2 are good and the diamond is worth considering. But is there really no ideal number in that range?

How important/accurate is the HCA rating of VG vs excellent in terms of light return, fire, scintillation, and spread. Should I try to get excellents on all of them? It seems like some HCA numbers give better ratings than others for those 4 categories.

Not really no. The HCA is used for rejection not selection. Also bear in mind the HCA cannot physically see the stone and is only estimating based on 4 parameters all these aspects of a diamond. Use the HCA to collate the stones that score below 2, then evaluate from there with images and trusted vendor input. Images always trump the HCA score.

The spread value, only diamonds with depths which measure 60.3% or less get excellent for spread, plenty of top cut stones get very good, its nothing to worry about.

ditto.
