Does it matter that brilliance and scintillation are only VG whereas fire and spread are excellent? Without an excellent stone to compare it to I don''t really know what I should be seeing. The idealscope image looks between excellent and VG I believe

Maybe Gary wants to jump in here and take this one himself, but in the mean time, I will give you the short answer.

The HCA is made to rule out poor diamond cuts rather than choose ideal ones. It is an approximation and is sometimes flawed. It is possible to have a stone that scores well above a 2 on the HCA and is an amazing diamond.

It sounds like you are thinking that the lower the score, the better the stone - not entirely true. Most experts here on PS will tell you the between 1-2 is where you want to be - not 0-1.

As for your question about VG and EX... the way the HCA is designed, it is not possible to get a "perfect" score of ZERO because some of the parts conflict with one another.

To sum it up... 1.7 is a fantastic HCA score but that should not be the final reason you pick your stone. If the picture looks good and the IS looks good and the vendor (that you trust) tells you that it is beautiful - go for it! I am sure you will not be dissappointed.

good luck

Mike

Thanks Mike - I''m not disappointed I''m more curious than anything else. I have seen people list 0-2 HCA scores of EX/EX/EX/VG and I know that this does not necessarily mean that the IS image will look good in reality but I have read that the HCA score is the best a diamond can be.

I''m such a thrillseeker that after reading that fire was excellent in this diamond and that fire was best seen under candlelight I filled the livng room with candles
