Hello everyone,

I am new to this world and just bought my first gemstone at an auction.
It’s a 6.30 ct IGI-certified Rubellite Tourmaline, beautifully cut in an oval modified brilliant style. The stone is very clear, but it’s not the classic pink color — it’s slightly darker, a mix of pink and purple, which I personally really like.
I would like to sell it for $150 per carat, or, for a quick sale to a dealer, at $100 per carat.
However, I haven’t received any responses yet. Maybe I overestimated the stone? Or do I simply need more patience?
I’m trying to be realistic.
Any tips or advice would be very helpful!
In the drive link you will find some photos
and the certificate.

Hi and welcome!

I can't tell much about quality from those images but why would someone buy a gem from a random stranger for a higher price than they could from the primary seller? Same for cars, food, clothes, etc. Buy if you love it. Retail consumers can not make money reselling gems. Lots of posts about this on this forum.

I agree. It wasn’t my original plan to buy and sell — it was more of a spontaneous action, and I ended up winning with my first bid. I actually thought the price would go higher, but I got it for $350.

So if I can’t sell it, I’m happy to keep it; maybe later I’ll turn it into a necklace.

To be honest, my question is more out of curiosity and a desire to learn, rather than a real problem.

But thank you very much for your advice!

Hello and welcome to the forum! In all honesty, despite its large size, I think you paid about what the gem is worth. Now that doesn't mean someone won't come along and spend more, but I reckon it could take some time. That being said, $950 is still a reach (IMO). I'd say $600 might be an appropriate starting point at retail. I don't think a vendor would pay that, however, and they don't tend to buy from the public anyway. If you want a quick sale, I think you'll need to get closer to your purchase price. But again, if you have the time, it doesn't hurt to try. Good luck!

Thank you very much for your time and effort. It helped me a lot to understand my position and to make the next right move.

Best of luck! Do you intend to continue collecting? If so, I always like to recommend this thread for an introductory crash course. We all started out just as you are... testing the waters. You're doing the right thing by seeking out knowledge and advice.
