Has anyone had double knee replacement at the same time?

How did everything go? I hope it went well and you are getting some rest between the walks and exercises. Update us when you feel up to it!

Thank you.

It was going well. The left leg is killing me and the right is ok. They have me on 10mg norco for pain, which for me is a lot, and I’m crying I’m in so much pain in the left leg.

I did have two nerve blocks and a spinal so I guess that is wearing off. My nurse is calling the doctor on call to see if they can add anything to the IV.

It’s this damn left leg that has been giving me all of the trouble.

Oh, they also didn’t get me standing up today — they said with a bilateral TKR, it’s better to do it the second day. Now I have Fanny exhaustion from being in the same position for more than 12 hours.

Uugh. I’m sorry to complain. I’ve been trying to sleep and I can’t settle...

FWIW, if they only did one knee, it was going to be the left one anyway, so the left one is a jerk, lol (trying to make a joke)

Ok, just got a morphine bolous in my IV with some percocet pills on the way.

Ok. Morphine and Percocet are now in. Thank God. I was shaking with pain and seeing stars

Hope you feel better. Keep ahead of the pain if you can!

Thanks, I waited two hours before I asked for something, so lesson learned there. Don’t soldier through pain...

I’m feeling loopy now and my eyelids are getting heavy, so here’s hoping I can get some sleep now.

Thank you again.

Pain level stuck so I just got another blous of morphine.

I have never experienced this level of pain before so I have no reference point.

This is bad.

Sorry! How about asking for dr to give you something else?

Don’t they do patient controlled analgesia with morphine? You’d get a better level of relief without asking the nurses all the time x

He has been calling the doctor about this all night.

I get mor Percocet in about an hour. If that doesn’t work, then they are calling an anesthesiologist to see if they have things they want to try like another spinal or nerve block.

Like a morphine pain pump where you press the button? To be honest, I haven’t seen one of those in years and I’m not sure anyone uses them any more.... not sure why.

See my above reply for the next steps.

Thank you to you both for your comments and concern. I appreciate it. I wouldn’t let DH sleep here tonight since he has clinic tomorrow morning.

I hope you’re resting now with less pain, @whitewave !

Hope you feel better soon, it should get better. Don't wait too long to ask for your pain meds, so you are not playing catch up.

Ok, I found out i might get one today, but the issue is that I had a surgery where the recovery involves movement and walking and this machine would likely make me sleepy and be a hazard to walking.

So we are waiting until 7 to consult with an Otho doc to see what to do.

Thanks, everyone. It’s just so bad.

Aww... hugs
Hope pain let's up soon. The up side (if any ) is that you don't have to do this again.

Right— before surgery it was only getting worse and now (I hope) it’s only going to get better.

Awww sending you bucketloads of healing dust and may your pain abate very soon. Lots of good wishes going your way for a speedy and complete recovery. You can do this and you are already over the scary part IMO. You got this @whitewave!

Ugh, pain is the worst.

I had a morphine pain pump in 2014 at HSS. I think they are still in use but I could be wrong. However, for me, morphine didn't touch my pain. I forget what they gave me though. When my DH had extreme pain from kidney stones morphine did nothing as well. I cannot remember the name of the pain meds they gave him but it started with a D. And was IV.

They were considering a nerve block for me if the pain worsened but that wasn't necessary. Maybe a consideration for you if your pain doesn't lessen soon though I know you have to get up and walk so not sure if that is practical.

Hope your pain is relieved very very soon !!!

Dalaudid?

I just had a giant panic attack with hyperventilation so they gave me my 100 mg of pristiq and the 1mh Klonipin I usually take at night for my insomnia—-since I only got like 1.5 hours of sleep, I didn’t want to take it with all the other meds I was as taking,

I got real anxious because it reminded me of the pain from the failed dental Implant I had years ago that we tried twice at 6 months apart.

So I’m wearing a nasal oxygen cannula since I have it and they said it won’t hurt.

Waiting for the doctors to decide how to handle this...

I’ll anything anyone can give me— prayers, thoughts, love and light... anything.

My new knees are zirconium I think.

Yes that was it! Dalaudid. Really helped Greg's unrelenting pain from kidney stones. I don't know if it would be helpful for knee surgery pain.

Ugh I am sorry about the panic attack. Those are terrifying. :( But you are in the right place and you will be well taken care of that I know. Hang in there. It will get better each day and each day you are one day closer to being back to yourself and better with two new knees!

Sending you prayers, good thoughts, lots of love and light and as always ((((Hugs)))) and bucketloads of healing vibes continued being sent your way @whitewave.

They were deciding between morphine and dalaudid last night and then went with morphine I think so that I could still take the Percocet.

Hope this makes you laugh or at least smile.

Maybe they can try the Dalaudid if you are still not experiencing pain relief. It was like a miracle drug for Greg. His pain was at a 10 and morphine and percocet etc didn't touch it and the dalaudid brought it down to a 4 IIRC.

Thank you. Thanks for the meme too. They always make me smile.

Thanks for your meme too, Missy.

If I disappear, it’s because I had to do PT and get my catheter out (TMI I guess, sorry).

So sorry you are dealing with this. I agree with everyone else that said to stay ahead of the pain. Veteran of My DH having many knee surgeries. It was one of my jobs to stay on top of that. Nurses are so amazing, and I mean a good nurse is the difference between misery and a much more tolerable and good experience. They have so many responsiblities though and I just tried to remember a gentle nudge without being a jerk if I felt like we might get behind on meds. Is there anyone to advocate for you? Healing vibes coming your way.

@whitewave you feeling better? After my lumbar decompression and laminotomy (partial laminectomy) in September, I was given fentanyl 1x when the nerve block wore off. It helped tremendously. Consider having DH stay tonight with you, particularly since he is dr. Stay hydrated. That helped me too. Hope you are feeling at least a little better.

Apologies for the late response. It's been a busy day.

Sorry that you are hurting so badly. I used to work as a physical therapy assistant (still licensed but don't practice due to back issues), and double knee patients always impressed me because of how tough they are. I can tell you that your doctor would not have done both if he didn't think you could handle it, so consider it a compliment. It's going to suck for about two weeks, but if you can hang in there after that you will notice a marked improvement. That always seemed to me to be the time that folks would turn a corner no matter how poorly they felt at first. Many before that time, too.

Yes, stay on top of pain meds. Don't be a hero, and don't let it get away from you. Ask if you need it. Use your ice packs, too, if they gave you some. They will help. If not, ask if you can have some.

And, yes, patients always thought their hardware was somehow messed up or surgery wasn't done well if things didn't feel right. You will feel weird things and hear clicks as everything, especially your new hardware, settles in and your body puts itself back together. Your anatomy has changed, so it will be a bit scary as you get used to your new knees, but it takes a lot to mess up what the surgeon has done.

I hope they have the pain medication sorted out and things are a bit better by now. You can do it, and before you know it you'll be on the other side of things and so happy you had it done!

Hopefully you have a better night and get some rest.
