What's even more amazing is that De Beers, with its massive resources, also staked the hell out of the whole area but came up completely dry. Aber, on a shoestring, managed to grab a few of the most valuable claims that Diamet and BHP (who own Ekati) didn't get to in time. De Beers's luck in Canada has been so bad it's like they're cursed.
