Harry Potter Wedding Touches?

So I LOVE Harry Potter and after reading a few things in hangout (and really thinking about this since we've gotten engaged), does anyone have any ideas on funny Harry Potter touches we can do at the wedding that will NOT be a crazy themed wedding? I was thinking we can name some of the drinks after potions and maybe have a few of the foods from HP, but other than that, I'm kind of stumped. I don't want to go overboard and see like a fanatic lol

Or am I just crazy? lol

Nooooo you are not crazy. I love Harry Potter! I would love it! I wish I could get married in the great hall with floating candles under an enchanted starry ceiling! If you could hang some sort of lights from the ceiling somehow, it might give a similar effect, but it would also be kind of a massive undertaking. I like the themed drinks (butterbeer? pumpkin juice? meade?) and maybe some "every flavor beans" in your wedding colors, in mason jars or pretty vases. If you are having menus or programs, you could tie them up like little scrolls. I'm not sure what else. It's easy to go overboard and be too "theme-y," so unless that's your goal, you definitely want to use a light touch. But I love the idea! Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Those programs were amazing! But seems like a crazy amount of work...I'm going to chat with FI about it though :)

I'm trying to think of potion names for the drinks. I have Lucky Luck Lemonade, but what sounds good with Sweet Tea, Unsweetened Tea ans Sangria? Also, what is pumpkin juice made of? I'm not sure if Butter Beer would work, because of the quantity needed.

I'm thinking of doing the every flavored beans and licorice wands on the cake table. I'm starting to get excited about it! :D :appl:

I saw a picture on pintrest that I plan to do for the bridesmaids. Let me see if I can find it...I LOVE it!

Loving this so much!

Unfortunately I don't have any HP ideas for you, but I can tell you what I nerdy things I did for my wedding if it helps. Our reception theme was 8-bit retro video game. However, our ceremony didn't have anything like that in it. I was trying to keep the ceremony formal and make the reception more fun. I wasn't going to post anything about it on here because I didn't know how the PS community would react to a nerd wedding theme ;)

We did not wear costumes, play video game music, have games set up or anything like that, but we did a few minor touches that went along with the theme. Our reception tables were identified by 8-bit video game characters that I converted to our wedding colors that I printed up and cut out on posterboard to put in stands, so guests had to match the character on their name card to the table. We also had a map of characters to lead them to their table. Our favors were Pacman & ghost chocolates that my mom and I made, our card box was a wedding Mario scene that I drew up, our champagne glasses had Mario and Peach etched on them (by SIL!) and our cake topper was a customized Mr. and Mrs. Pacman from Etsy.

BTW I love all things HP! I LOVE that pic of the bridesmaids holding the books! SO CUTE! If I were you I would browse offbeat bride or just search harry potter wedding to see what you can come up with! I did a search for video game weddings so I was able to decide what and what not to do for a nerdy type theme!

ETA: we also showed a wedding video before we were introduced by the DJ and there was a part in it where I beat my husband at a video game. LOL

Oh my gosh, go on Pinterest and search for Harry Potter wedding. You will find AMAZING inspiration photos!

This is one of my favorites:

ETA:

Also, the people on the amazing site below recreate movie props. There is an entire forum of Free Harry Potter Paper Props:
http://www.therpf.com/free-harry-potter-paper-props/

You'll have to register on the site (it's free) to download anything, but these props are AMAZING. I downloaded a ton of things to print for our annual HP movie marathon, and just made a bunch of candy boxes. I printed these on plain old paper and they still look great. I can't wait to see what they'll look like when I print them on card stock. The Umbridge proclamations are amazing, as are the Wanted posters. Basically, these people have made and shared anything you could want from HP. So awesome!

If I were having a Harry Potter wedding I would totally customize one of these boxes and use it as the favor.

gem_anemone, we need pictures!!!!

I'd get some sticks, and make them look like wands. And use them in your flower arrangements.

I'd also put a sorting hat on your escort cards table, or your guest book table, or your gift table.

I'd add the jelly belly beans from HP into your idea for favors.

Haha I didn't want to thread jack so I posted some in the Gem Anemone thread :)

Ladies, I'm super excited about this! I talked with FI who laughed a little at me, but I think he secret loves the idea too! :)

Haven - GREAT web site! I just joined and can't wait to scope everything out and start downloaded stuff to print!

Gypsy - Yep, I was thinking about adding some fun little goodies to the cake table. While some people won't get it, other will and they will love it too!

Gem - I am about to scope your nerdy stuff right now! I LOVE it! I think it adds just a bit more personality..I mean come one now, how many other weddings will be like it? NONE!

Time to make things happen! Oh man, I feel like I just accepted something crazy lol

I was just thinking; how cool would it be to have a marauders map guest book? With little sets of footprints that people can sign? Now where to find that? I have zero ability to create my own, but would love to have one that I can frame and hang up in our house. Any ideas on how to make this happen??

Stacy...I don't think you're crazy at all and I hope you're able to add the subtle touches you're looking for!

Here's a wand tutorial that I think is pretty awesome: http://browse.deviantart.com/artisan/?q=tutorial#/d389bn0

Perhaps a HP-themed garter? http://www.etsy.com/listing/96787795/custom-gryffindor-house-harry-potter

Loving the wand tutorial, but not sure I want to get that crazy with it. Maybe I can have a few around without seeming like a crazy person?

I liked Gypsy's idea of having them in the flower arrangements. :praise: Or you can just have one or two mixed in with the pens by the guest book (along with some long feather "quills" and some regular (but pretty!) ink pens)...

As for a Marauder's Map guest book...hmmm...definitely would be very cool...perhaps you can find someone on Etsy who could manage something like that?

I found a maurader's map on Think Geek:

And maybe you can get small wooden footprints - the best I could do is these wooden buttons that you can glue around the map for people to sign.

If wooden footprints prove too hard to find in arts and crafts stores or online, how about wooden hearts for the lovefest of a wedding in lieu of footprints?

Fi found a pack of red ones at A.C. Moore or Michaels the other day. They would provide pops of color against the beige map, and all you'd need to provide guests are black sharpies/permanent markers to sign with!

I talked with a lady on etsy about making a flat marauders map for me. She said she thinks it'll be about $200 and that seems a bit pricey to me...although VERY cool to have a customized map! I'm on the fence about it, so thank you for the link to the origin map! I do love it :)

Wedding cake toppers - your favorite male and female characters (or couple, whatever)! I want to incorporate fun touches from our fannish obsessions into our wedding and I'm thinking we'll do Han & Leia cake toppers - I have these awesome bobbleheads that would be perfect. Ron & Hermione would be perfect for a HP wedding. There are bobbleheads, action figures, TONS of HP-themed toys you could use as cake toppers. I guess you don't even need people, you could do anything.

At some point you could play the Harry Potter theme song from the movies. It strikes me as good for a recessional. I don't know the structure of your wedding, but there should be a place you can put it that's good.

And OH MY GOD I AM SO STEALING THAT BOOK IDEA. THE BEST EVER. My bridespeople will think I'm so crazy. There's not enough of us to do all seven books, but we can leave the seventh out since it's my least fave.

And those garters. omg omg hyperventilating WHICH TO PICK. I didn't know I could have a TARDIS GARTER. omg, even better is imagining the look on my fiance's face when he sees it!

What about having the groomsmen wear socks with the colours of the houses? Could be a cute little secret touch.

First off, thank you all so much for your help with ideas! Sadly, I have not left myself enough time and do not have enough man power to make this happen. That's ok though, I think I will take Haven's idea and have a Harry Potter themed Halloween party!!

"Signature" drink - butterbeer!

http://voices.yahoo.com/harry-potter-top-10-butterbeer-recipes-473697.html

A combo of soda and butterschnapps or cream soda and butterschnapps!

Maybe instead of table numbers, you name the tables after the different schools and different houses within the schools?
Butterbeer is the official drink of my book club! Mmmmmmm. There are great recipes for hot and cold versions, too. They are all equally delicious.

DO IT!!!! I am so excited for Halloween this year. I'm pregnant and lazy so we aren't doing any of our usual entertaining this year other than our annual HP movie marathon/Halloween party. I can't wait!!!!

Our house would actually be perfect for an HP Halloween event!! We live in this giant old creep house that we're remodeling. IT was built in 1910 and has a lot of cool features (which we are still sorting through underneath all the ugly wallpaper lol). One of F's friend is in film school and before he went off to school (or maybe during) they filmed a short little scary movie here...very cool though!

I love that regardless of being pregnant and lazy (which is totally ok in my book!) you are still doing HP...oh how I love HP!

Sorry, Stacy's MOH here - Do you have cake toppers???!!! I'm sure we could find HP figurines...

Lol..nope! I was just planning to put the custom bobble heads that I had made on the cake table, but not on the actual cake itself. If you'd like to do a search for me, I am totally ok with that :) Also, I have no garter. How important is this? lol

Oh, nothing can stop me from doing our annual HP movie marathon. I'm almost finished rereading Goblet of Fire, I always reread the series in the summer and fall to gear up for it. I LOVe HP!!!!

Haven, you're a girl after my own heart! I LOVE re-reading them! :appl: I am starting with the first book (again) tonight!
