It's not a true red and I thought you wanted a true red spinel? It looks to be more purple/pink. Does it fluorescence? How about side and pavilion views? I see very clear extinction in the 4 corners but it might just be due to it being a static picture.

If you are looking for a more pinkish red spinel, then this one has nice colour. I do see 2 light spots; not sure if it's zoning or just the lighting. This is where additional pictures are helpful.

Yes Chrono, you are right. I do want a true red and this is more on the pink side

I fell for this one last night. I think this is about the quality I would need.

I don''t know why people are so down on cutlets, though. I don''t think it would kill a stone like this. If this one had a more antique looking cut, it would be perfect, to me.

though, but I''m sure that''s to be expected.

Anyway, good luck in finding what makes you happy!!

Looks very nice with a hint of orange. The picture is very dark though which makes the stone show some extinction. I would ask for better pictures if possible. It''s certainly a stone I wouldn''t mind adding to my collection.

Here's a gorgeous red. Is there a dealer in your area? It's hard to judge colored stones from photos.

Woah! But it's going to cost an arm and a leg. I've looked at Pala before and had my usual favourite vendors call for pricing. Their prices are astronomical.

You get what you pay for.

From that photo, that is my preferred hue for red spinel.

Not really, as Harriet can attest, you just need the right contacts and TIME! For those who want instant gratification, then Pala, Cherrypicked and R. Wise are for them. For those who like the hunt, knows the right people and know their coloured gemstones, better pricing can be had. It's still expensive but much less than what Pala, Cherrypicked and R. Wise are asking for. I would guess that one to be about $2k to $3k per carat.

I'm sorry if you took it the wrong way. I too was merely explaining about pricing and how different vendors charge very differently because you made the comment that you get what you pay for. Of course, when it is too cheap, I get suspicious but I have no intention of paying astronomical prices unless absolutely necessary.

I didn't.

I'm partial to the hunt, but for some, Pala et al may be a good option--like going to GOG for a diamond--they take a lot of the legwork out.

I prefer to purchase/view gems in person--best way to learn about color.

Which is why I explained that you must have the time and inclination. In essence, we are in agreement, so why the sheesh?

sheesh? being funny--I''m not taking it seriously. I rarely use sheesh, and when I do, I''m being funny--no ill intent.

Thanks for the explaination. I see that I took it the wrong way, my apologies again. When I write sheesh, it''s usually to express frustration.

oh ok--Sorry Chrono! My sense of humor may not translate--tone is important--I was actually smiling when I wrote sheesh! Thanks for letting me know--I can be a bit silly.

If that spinel looks anything like it looks on my monitor, I can see why it''s $2K a carat. Wowzers that''s a beauty.

DROOOL!!!!

I was checking out Pala last night for red spinels, and found these 2. Emailed WF for prices today and this is what I got back.

Lauren,
That 2nd one on Pala is eye popping. No wonder it''s more than $2K/ct. The cut is excellent too.

I''d love to grab it, but it''s way, way, WAY above my budget, so I thought I''d put it out there for anyone else looking for red spinels. I just LOVED that second one!

Gorgeous color! Price is on par with what I thought. Fine red spinel is worth it imo. I actually don't think Pala's prices are that high for what they offer. I'd take one over a ruby any day.

Such pretty stones! Is spinel hard enough for an engagement ring?

Yes, they are just a notch "softer" than sapphires/rubies which are commonly set as engagement rings. Of course no gemstone and diamond are indestructable so I'd still take the usual care of removing them when doing yardwork, housework etc.

Ditto! I just think I needed a bit of a reality check. I may have set my expectations for size vs. budget way too high.

OMG I love all the ones posted from Pala - they have such beautiful things!

Sorry about the budgetary limitations - I''ve seen people get some incredible deals on here on GORGEOUS stones though, so I''m confident with patience and time its possible

Yup, patience and time. It''s the same way I envy those who are able to scout out amazing deals on ebay for antique jewellery.

heehee--I''ve found my share, because I''ve had a ton of time lately. (unable to work because of my broken finger)

I''ve sifted through literally thousands of stones and found some awesome deals! I''m definitely a forager.

I think I''d go to Pala for only certain gem species if I was able, but the rest? Bring on the hunt!

There are other spinel hues out there that are very pretty for much less--as you know, L!

Someday, I'd like one of these flame red beauties. I met a dealer out here that had some fine examples--and it took all of my might to pry myself away from them haha--hubby said, "step away from the spinel."
