I know it isn''t typical, but I took a chance and bought a diamond off ebay. I paid $2000 for a 1.29 marquise ring. It was appraised as: F color, SI-1 clarity, 11.48 x 5.25 x 3.56 mm, depth, 67.81%. Total carat weight 1.29 carats. The ring band is 5.77 mm wide and has a six-prong setting. Total weight is 8.6g. The appraisal (for $9600) was done by Commonwealth Gemological Laboratory and signed by Geoffrey Schultz. I''m not sure if that means anything, but I figured I''d mention it. I was so pleasantly surprised by the diamond when it arrived. Before I got overly excited, I hopped in the car and went to my local jewelry store to have it looked at. The jeweler kind of chuckled when I told him what I bought, but stopped laughing when I opened the box and showed him the ring. It was real, and when he polished the band and cleaned it, it was absolutely beautiful. He said I was crazy to buy a diamond on ebay, and I was very lucky it worked out, and I should quit while I was ahead. It was a slow day at the jewelry store, and the jeweler sat me down, and thoroughly checked the diamond and had me look at it so I would be able to identify it if needed. I was very impressed that he was willing to do that considering I wasn''t buying anything from the store. I think he wanted to check out the diamond as well. So, it worked out for me, and I don''t know much about diamonds, other than the basics. A couple of things I did know to do: First, I only looked at jewelry being sold by private individuals (with good feedback) who were selling their personal jewelry. Second, I asked a lot of questions of the seller. In general reliable sellers will answer questions promptly. Third, I didn''t communicate with anyone outside of ebay. One seller (who I didn''t buy from) offered to send additional pictures to my email account, and then said I could buy at a discount outside of ebay. This was a big red flag. Next, I paid with paypal. I''ve never tried to use their protection policy, but I felt better knowing I may have some recourse, if needed. Finally, I made sure the package was insured and asked the seller to send me a message and let me know when the package was mailed, which she did.
I think I''ve attached a picture, this is my first post and I''m not sure if I attached it correctly.
I''m sure the jeweler was right, I was probably crazy to buy a diamond on ebay, but I''m glad it worked out, and I wanted to share a positive story.
