I know it isn''t typical, but I took a chance and bought a diamond off ebay. I paid $2000 for a 1.29 marquise ring. It was appraised as: F color, SI-1 clarity, 11.48 x 5.25 x 3.56 mm, depth, 67.81%. Total carat weight 1.29 carats. The ring band is 5.77 mm wide and has a six-prong setting. Total weight is 8.6g. The appraisal (for $9600) was done by Commonwealth Gemological Laboratory and signed by Geoffrey Schultz. I''m not sure if that means anything, but I figured I''d mention it. I was so pleasantly surprised by the diamond when it arrived. Before I got overly excited, I hopped in the car and went to my local jewelry store to have it looked at. The jeweler kind of chuckled when I told him what I bought, but stopped laughing when I opened the box and showed him the ring. It was real, and when he polished the band and cleaned it, it was absolutely beautiful. He said I was crazy to buy a diamond on ebay, and I was very lucky it worked out, and I should quit while I was ahead. It was a slow day at the jewelry store, and the jeweler sat me down, and thoroughly checked the diamond and had me look at it so I would be able to identify it if needed. I was very impressed that he was willing to do that considering I wasn''t buying anything from the store. I think he wanted to check out the diamond as well. So, it worked out for me, and I don''t know much about diamonds, other than the basics. A couple of things I did know to do: First, I only looked at jewelry being sold by private individuals (with good feedback) who were selling their personal jewelry. Second, I asked a lot of questions of the seller. In general reliable sellers will answer questions promptly. Third, I didn''t communicate with anyone outside of ebay. One seller (who I didn''t buy from) offered to send additional pictures to my email account, and then said I could buy at a discount outside of ebay. This was a big red flag. Next, I paid with paypal. I''ve never tried to use their protection policy, but I felt better knowing I may have some recourse, if needed. Finally, I made sure the package was insured and asked the seller to send me a message and let me know when the package was mailed, which she did.

I think I''ve attached a picture, this is my first post and I''m not sure if I attached it correctly.

I''m sure the jeweler was right, I was probably crazy to buy a diamond on ebay, but I''m glad it worked out, and I wanted to share a positive story.

Job well done!! Welcome to Pricescope!!
You are not crazy to purchase a diamond on E-bay..you took a chance, and LOOK! Amazing ring, and an amazing price..WOW!
Some jewelers are just upset, or jealous that consumers are not buying from them, and turning to E-bay, and can you blame us?? I've purchased several diamond rings through E-bay, that would sell for 4-5 times the price at a "jeweler"! Like you, once appraised, I'm blown away by the quality of the diamonds!! Enjoy your beautiful ring..almost a carat and a half for $ 2000 (F,SI-1, appraised at over $ 9000)..show that baby off!!

Congratulations! Most of my jewelry comes from ebay. I''ve had no problems returning anything that didn''t live up to it''s description and the things I do have are just beautiful. You can get some awesome deals there and find things that aren''t available around where you live. My watch from the 1940''s is so gorgeous and I''d never be able to find something like that in my podunk town.

You did great but I think instead of feeling like you lucked out and that you shouldn''t ever do that again...you''ll end up buying more from ebay. As long as you''re careful and do use a credit card with Paypal(never pay with your bank account or what is in your account) you''ll be a-ok.

It''s a beautiful ring and can you imagine what you would have paid at a jewelry store for the same thing? That''s money saved that you can use for other pretties.

That''s an amazing deal!! Congratulations, your ring is very pretty. Some hand shots please

Looks great! Good find :D

I bought a diamond of ebay and was just fretting until I got it.. but I followed some of the same steps you did and did just fine. One thing I do also is look at the quality of the pictures--- if they are standard with professional lighting etc.. then I skip it. If you can tell someone took the picture in their home... whatever.. I''m more likely to look at it because it looks real. If that makes sense.

Would love to see more pics too :D

Actually, there are some great ebay diamond dealers with pricing that is just unbeatable anywhere else. Why? The diamonds are typically second hand, and for me, I find that the best kept secret about diamond buying. Why pay more for something new when you can get it at a substantially lower cost because it's pre-owned? Unlike cars, most diamonds do not decay just because they're pre-owned. In fact, many jewelers reuse old diamonds in new jewelry pieces, and make a nice hefty profit that way. I think you made a very smart purchase!! Congratulations!!

Congrats!!! Such an awesome deal and a lovely ring!

Wow! What an amazing deal and beautiful diamond!

From another avid Ebayer, you did fantastic! Your money went incredibly far, and I find that for my buck, I have ended up with some amazing second-hand diamonds.

Congratulations!

Congrats, beautiful diamond!

bailey, I think you got a great deal from an honest Ebayer and just as a precaution that we should all follow, you made you purchase by the rules and kept yourself protected. (I''ve had a few good scares and now I know better)

I think the stone is a dazzler! It would be impossible to get an F color diamond of over a carat in any shape in any store. Ebay has some great deals and you definitely scooped one! Congrats to you!

You got an amazing deal!! The ring and diamond are beuatiful!

I got my 5.13CT yellow pear diamond on ebay as well and it was exactly what was described and got a killer of a deal on it too!

Sometimes, good things happen on Ebay - might not be the norm, but in your case it was too! Congrats!!!

I''m not going to reset it right away. I thought I''d hate the wide band, but when the ring arrived, I was surprised at how nice it looked with just a plain band. My original ering was a small marquise with a diamond ring guard, it was kind of busy. I really like how the simple setting makes the diamond the focal point. All I''ve done with it is have the band sized and polished, and I wear the ring with a 5 stone anniversary band. When I do reset it, I''ll probably go with an E/W.

Congrats on the great find!

Beatiful marquise! Great deal!

What an amazing find! It will look gorgeous in an east-west setting, if you decide to go that route. Congrats!
